DV opened the door to his suite and stepped inside. How did he get so lucky? They all thought they had the upper hand when all they’d done was step right into the waiting trap. He couldn’t wait to spring the trap and let them all know that there was no escape.
He switched on the light and spotted his visitor sitting on the sofa with a wry smile. “Well, this is an unexpected pleasure. I thought we agreed that we’d meet tomorrow.”
“It couldn’t be avoided,” Rachel said as she lifted a glass of wine from the table in front of her and brought it to her lips.
“And just why couldn’t it be avoided?” He asked, closing the door behind him and walking over to sit beside her.
“The boy is having problems again. We can’t keep exploiting him this way. We have to bring in another projectionist.”
“What exactly is the problem?”
“He’s having nightmares that he can’t get away from. They’re repetitive and they’re apparently very vivid. He wakes up in sweats and it takes hours for him to calm down. If we don’t back off, he could become permanently insane,” Rachel paused, “I know this Scott Baldwin thing has you resorting to desperate measures, but this boy shouldn’t be part of the fallout.”
DV looked at her for a moment before walking over to the bar and pouring himself a drink. As he replaced the top back onto the carafe, he spoke, “Call Tamara.”
“Tamara?” Rachel repeated the name, “Are you sure you want to do that? If she finds out that this involves Eve Lambert, things could become very sordid. Tamara is only going to complicate things.”
“I know that,” He said sternly, “But she’s also the best. I’m not going to have some simpleton working on this one. Besides Tamara could help you with Julie Devlin.”
Rachel frowned, “Yes, I’m sure she could, but bringing Tamara into the same fold as Eve Lambert is only going to resort in disaster.”
“I agree, but it doesn’t have to be disastrous for us. Tamara hates Eve with every fiber in her being. It might help us with the Baldwin problem. If we can use Tamara to manipulate Eve into hurting Baldwin even worse, it might be more productive.”
“I think you’re taking a huge risk bringing her into the picture. Tamara isn’t reasonable where Eve is concerned. She will do any and everything in her power to destroy, Eve. Even if it means double-crossing you.”
“Tamara isn’t going to double-cross me. She’s too much like me for her own good. She knows that loyalty is something that’s irreplaceable and worth more than anything else on this planet. She’ll do what she’s told.”
“You have a lot of faith in someone who almost destroyed you.”
“That’s before she knew she was my daughter, Rachel. She doesn’t resent me anymore and to be quite honest, I think she likes the fact that my blood is in her veins. It gives her a reason to strive for perfection.”
Rachel lowered her eyes to her glass of wine, “And what about Eve? Don’t you think she’ll be suspicious when she sees Tamara in town?”
“Probably, but at this point, it really doesn’t matter. If Eve gets anxious from Tamara’s presence, it can only help us. Eve loses her ability to think rationally when she’s scared.”
“So you think that by bringing Tamara into the picture, Eve will know that she’s in over her head?”
“She’s known she was in over her head a long time ago. She just keeps fighting it.”
“I hate to be a spoil-sport, but Tamara is going to want blood. She’s not going to be thinking rationally either.”
DV turned back to look at Rachel, “I realize that. But I also know that if she wants to hurt Eve, nothing is going to stand in her way. She’ll do whatever it takes.”
Rachel nodded, placing her wine glass back on the table before her and took her purse in hand, “I’ll call her then. But remember that I warned you about the consequences of this.”
“So noted. Good night, Rachel.”
“Good night, David,” Rachel said softly
before leaving his hotel room.
