Sins Of The Father
Chapter Four
by Katie
Grace stairs at Chris for a minute in disbelief then quickly jumps into
nurse mode and begins checking his vitals as she talks to him.
Grace: Chris, you're at General hospital, you've been in a bad car
accident. Nod your head if you understand what I just said.
Chris weakly nods his head. Grace smiles
Grace: Good. I'll Paige Boardman and let him know you're awake he'll
want to examen you.
Chris motions with his hand he wants to write something. Grace grabs
a pad and pencil and hands it to him. Chris writes something down. Grace
reads it.
Grace: "How badly am I hurt?"
Grace takes a deep breath.
Grace: Well, you suffered bad head trauma. But since you are awake
it looks as if that's healing up nicely. And you sustained massive internal
injuries. Boardman was able to correct most of it in surgery. Right now
the most important thing is for you to rest, okay?
Chris nods then writes something else
Grace: "what wasn't he able to fix?"
Grace takes a deep breath, then takes Chris's hand in hers.
Grace: Chris your liver was badly damaged and, and you may end up needing
a new one. But, but listen I don't want you worrying okay. You are in great
hands and, and I have seen plenty pf patients pull through something like
this. So, please try not to worry okay? Just rest and let us do the worrying
deal?
Chris nods weakly and writes something else down
Grace: "Thank you"
Grace smiles
Grace: You're welcome. I'll go get Boardman now.
She pats Chris's hand and leaves the room. Chris looks around the cold
lonely hospital room as his situation sinks in. A deep loneliness fills
him as tears fill his eyes. They slowly run down his cheeks as his hands
grip the covers of his hospital bed.
Jake is working at the nurses station when Matt comes up.
Matt: Hey Jake
Jake: Hi Matt.
Jake looks at Matt closely trying to see if he notices anything but
he doesn't.
Jake: Hey Matt, you got a minute?
Matt shrugs
Matt: Yeah, sure what's up?
Jake: Uh lets go over to the waiting area all right?
Matt nods as he fallows Jake. Matt senses Jake's uneasiness.
Matt: You okay Jake? You seem kind of edgy.
Jake: Well, uh yeah, I guess I am kind of on edge.
Matt: How come?
Jake: Well see, I'm really worried about this friend of mine. See he's
a really great guy, and I really admire and look up to him. But he's started
acting strange lately. You know, not like himself. He's doing and saying
things that are very out of character and I'm worried about him. I think
something might be wrong, and I want to help.
Matt nods
Matt: Well, you should ask him. I mean, I take it you're close to this
guy right?
Jake nods
Jake: Oh yeah, we've been friends for a while.
Matt: Well, then you should ask him.
Jake: Yeah, okay, I guess I just don't want to upset him you know.
I mean, I don't know that anything is wrong. I just know he's acting oddly.
Matt: If he really is a good guy he won't be upset. He'll be touched
you were worried. And hey if he's acting oddly there probably is a reason.
Jake nods
Jake: Yeah, yeah you're right. I'll ask him.
Matt smiles
Matt: Great.
He turns to go.
Jake: Matt what's going on with you.
Matt stops and turns
Matt: What?
Jake: I'm worried about you man. I heard about what happened with Chris,
and Grace told me you threatened her. This isn't the Matt Harmen I know
and think so much of. The Matt Harmen I know would never ever turn his
back on a patient no matter who it was, or what they had done. The Matt
Harmen I know would never threaten someone. Especially a lady like Grace
who is good to the core. Look, Matt I care about you, and if there is some
kind of problem I want to help. What's going on?
Matt sighs and rubs his forehead.
Jake: Look Matt, I'm not trying to pry but I'm your friend and I care
about you. What you did today is serious. You could get into a lot of trouble.
And not just with Alan either. Grace has a lot of friends and if she wanted
to she could really make trouble for you. You've worked to hard to get
where you are today to through it all away. Now, I've persuaded Grace to
let it slide for now, but Matt you have to stop acting like this. Whatever
is wrong, what ever is bothering you. It's not worth risking your reputation,
and it's especially not worth risking your career.
Matt smiles
Matt: Jake you're a great friend. I really appreciate what you're saying.
And I'm touched really I am. But there isn't anything wrong, okay? Look,
everyone has their limits. Everyone has people and or situations that they
just can't handle and doctors are no different. I hate Chris with every
fiber of my being. In my book he's the most disgusting, most awful, most
pathetic waist of skin and bones imaginable. And right or wrong I just
couldn't bring myself to treat him. Look, all doctors have limits man.
And it's not like I didn't leave him in capable hands. I knew Grace and
Jill were both there and both highly experienced. And I also knew that
Boardman and Qourtermaine were on their way to help. I really think I gave
him the best chance for survival by leaving. I hate him so much Jake, I
honestly don't think I could have done my best for him even if I had tried.
Jake: And what about threatening Grace?
Matt: Okay, I admit with that I was way out of line. And I'm sorry.
I was just frustrated and angry. I have always given 110% and the one time
I don't I get it thrown in my face. Grace just really made me mad today.
I just couldn't work on Chris, and she didn't get it. But that is no excuse
for threatening her like that. I owe her an apology.
Jake nods
Jake: I think that's probably a good idea.
Matt nods
Matt: Hey listen thanks for getting her to back off this thing.
Jake nods
Jake: Yeah, well I figured one incident wasn't enough to go tell Alan.
But listen Matt you know you are going to have to find away to treat patients
you don't like. Cause you're going to come into contact with them.
Matt looks at Jake seriously
Matt: That won't be a problem, cause there is no one I hate as much
as Ramsey. Jake to be perfectly honest I can't help but pray that he dies.
Matt turns quickly and leaves, leaving a stunned Jake watching him
go.
Julie is sitting in Frank's book the journal now re hid under the bed.
She trying hard not to cry as she thinks about what she has just found
out.
Julie: Oh God, just the idea of someone hurting Frank makes me sick
with rage. How, how could any man hurt his own child. Especially a child
like Frank. I'm sure he was just as wonderful as a kid as he is now.
Julie shakes her head and sighs she reaches over and picks up a picture
of her and Frank off the night stand and looks at it sadly.
Julie: Why Frank, why couldn't you tell me? What did you think I would
say? Did you think I'd leave you because of this? Do you have that little
faith in me, in us?
Just then Frank comes in Julie quickly puts the picture down and wipes
her face off.
Julie: Hey, did you have a good shower?
Frank gets into bed.
Frank: Yeah, it was good.
He gets a devilish grin on his face.
Frank: Though it would have been even better if you had joined me.
He leans over and kisses Julie.
Julie tries to smile Frank notices something is wrong.
Frank: Julie what is it, what's wrong?
Julie takes a deep breath trying to collect her thoughts
Julie: Frank, do you trust me?
Frank: Of course I trust you, Julie.
Julie: Do you? I mean, not just do you trust me like you can tell me
something and I won't blab it. Or you can trust me not to lie to you. But
do you really trust me. You know, trust in me to open up your heart to
me. Talk to me about things that are happening now, may happen in the future,
or might have happened in the past. Do you feel comfortable telling me
things that, that are difficult?
Frank: Julie, I'm not really sure I get where you're going with this.
I mean, yeah I don't talk much about my past but. . .
Julie: Frank, you do so much for everyone else. You take care of the
world and then some. I mean, whenever I've needed you, or Joe has needed
you, you are always there. But, but I want to be the one that is there
for you. I want to be the one you turn to.
Frank smiles
Frank: Julie I'm fine okay, you don't have to worry about me. Look
it's late and we're both tired. What do you say we get some sleep.
Julie tries to smile
Julie: Sure.
They kiss goodnight turn out the light then snuggle up together under
the covers. Both unable to sleep but wanting the other to think that they
are.
Frank thinking: Oh God I wish I could tell her how I feel, but I just
can't risk loosing her I love her to much to risk that.
Julie thinking: Oh God I love him so much. I just wish he'd let me
in. I just wish he'd let me help him deal with his past. I just wish he
loved me. Why doesn't he trust me, why doesn't he love me.
They lay silently in one another's arms their thoughts keeping them
miles apart.
Eve is sitting in bed quietly when Scott crawls in.
Scott: So, you and your sister have a nice little talk?
Eve sighs
Eve: Well, we had a talk, not sure if I'd call it nice but we had a
talk.
Eve wipes a tear from her face. Scott takes her hand in his
Scott: Okay now tell me what happened? Did you two fight?
Eve laughs
Eve: Oh I'm sure it would have ended up that way had she stuck around.
See, my sister and I don't see eye to eye on most things. We used to but
once I went to college things changed, you know. It's like she held my
making something of myself against me. She put this wall up and I've never
quite managed to get passed it. And now. . .
Eve sighs
Eve: Now she's here stirring up trouble as usual.
Scott: What kind of trouble?
Eve: Our father was murdered some years ago, and she wants justice.
Scott: And you don't?
Eve sighs
Eve: Scott there was a full investigation that lasted for nearly a
year. But nothing ever came of it. There were a few leads but nothing solid.
So they closed the case. I don't know maybe if I'd had known him better,
or if he'd been some great guy I'd see the point in trying to get the case
re opened.
Eve shakes her head.
Scott: But you don't see any point?
Eve: Scott he beat my mother, Shelly, and I senseless until I was about
four. Then he just up and left. He was a druggie, an alcoholic, had a bad
temper, and was in jail more then he was out. My guess is he just crossed
the wrong person. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he deserved to be
murdered no one does. But, Scott, he was a horrible man, and there already
has been an investigation.
Scott: And Shelly doesn't agree?
Eve: She seems to think the cops gave up, but considering they looked
for nearly a year I find that hard to believe. The thing about Shelly is
that she takes anything bad that happens as a personal insult and when
Shelly gets insulted.
Eve shakes her head
Scott: She fights back
Eve: You guessed it.
Scott: Well, if there really are no new leads I doubt Shelly will get
very far anyway.
Eve nods
Eve: I know, it's just
Eve shakes her head
Scott: Just what?
Eve: I don't know Scott. I just have this terrible feeling that if
she starts digging what we find maybe a whole lot more then any of us bargained
for.
Scott wraps Eve in his arms
Scott: It's going to be okay, I'm sure everything will be fine.
He holds her close as Eve tries to put the worries out of her mind.
It is now morning and Kevin and Lucy are driving over to the light house.
Lucy: Oh Doc I know we have a plane to catch, but I just so wanted
to tell Victor our wonderful news.
Kevin smiles
Kevin: I think it's a great idea. I'm sure Victor will be doing cartwheels
when he learns he's going to be a grandpa.
Lucy smiles happily and pats her stomach
Lucy: I know I could do a few myself. Oh Doc this has been the most
incredibly wonderful 24 hours of my life!
Kevin smiles reaches over and squeezes Lucy's hand
Kevin: Mine to Lucy mine to.
They arrive at the light house and quickly go in.
Kevin: Victor!
Lucy: Youhoo, Victor are you here?
Kevin: Maybe he's in his room.
Lucy: Yeah, it is early.
They go to Victor's room and open in the door when they walk in they
find Victor and Mary rolling around in the covers in the throws of hot
passionate love.
Lucy: OH MY GOSH!!!
Mary: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Kevin: Uh excuse us
Kevin pulls a stunned Lucy out of the bed room into the living room.
Both are trying hard not to laugh. Victor soon comes out with his bathrobe
on.
Kevin: Victor I am so sorry.
Lucy: We had no idea Mary was here. We never met to walk in on anything.
Mary comes out with her bathrobe on
Lucy: Oh Mary I'm so sorry. We had no idea Victor wasn't alone.
Victor: It's okay, it's okay. This is your home. We just had no idea
you'd be coming by before your flight today.
Mary is blushing bright red.
Mary: I am sorry we were doing that in your home. Please don't tell
anyone.
Lucy: What? Oh Mary there is nothing to be ashamed of. Finding love
is a wonderful thing and should be celebrated. And this is Victor's home
to.
Kevin: Absolutely. We are just so sorry we walked in on the two of
you. We really should have knocked.
Lucy: Yeah, that's something I need to work on.
Mary: Lets just forget this whole incident okay?
Lucy: It's forgotten.
Victor: So what brings you by anyway? Don't you have a plane to catch?
Kevin and Lucy beam happily.
Lucy: Well, we do. But first we wanted to share some very exciting
news with you.
Kevin: We found out about this last night and we just couldn't wait
to share it with you.
Victor: Well then by all means do tell.
Lucy: I'm pregnant!
Victor: Oh Lucy that is simply splendid! Congratulations!
Victor hugs her tightly
Mary: Oh that is so wonderful, congratulations. You must be so excited.
Lucy: Thankyou, both of you. Yes, we really are.
Victor shakes Kevin's hand
Victor: Congratulations son, I know you'll be an excellent father.
Kevin smiles truly touched by this and they hug.
Kevin: Thanks Dad.
Mary: Oh yes, this will be such a lucky baby to have the two of you
for parents.
Lucy smiles
Lucy: Thank you Mary that means a lot coming from you.
Victor: Well how about if I wip us all up some breakfast.
Lucy: Oh Victor that is so nice of you to offer but
Kevin: But we really do have a plane to catch.
Lucy: We just wanted to stop by and give you the wonderful news.
Victor: Well I'm certainly glad you did. Now, have a wonderful Honeymoon
you two.
Mary: Oh yes, have a wonderful one.
They all hug and say good-bye then Kevin and Lucy head out. Mary and
Victor look at each other.
Victor: Shall we return to our morning activities my sweet?
Mary smiles
Mary: Lock the door and you're on.
Victor: Right behind you, my love.
He pulls her into a tender kiss and they go back to his room. Kevin
and Lucy are now in the car.
Lucy: So you think we'll be like them, when we're there age?
Kevin smiles devilishly
Kevin: You mean full of passion? I sure hope so.
They smile at each other. Kevin leans over kisses her softly and they
leave for the air port.
The sun streams into Scott's bed room window, and gently cascades across
Eve as she sleeps. Scott sits on the side of the bed watching her with
pure love. Eve's eyes flutter open, and Scott smiles at her.
Scott: Hey there, how'd you sleep, sleeping beauty?
Eve smiles
Eve: Great, but it would be even better if you were still under the
covers with me.
Scott smiles devilishly
Scott: I think that can be arranged. But first there is a little something
we need to take care of.
Eve looks at him a tad confused.
Eve: What do you mean?
Scott: Look, under your pillow.
Eve looks at Scott questioningly
Eve: What?
Scott: Come on, come on, come on.
Eve: Okay.
Eve lifts up her pillow and finds a small velvet box.
Eve: What on earth?
Scott: Well, will you look at that. You woke up to a gift under your
pillow. Why don't you open it.
Eve: What are you up to Scotty?
Scott smiles
Scott: Open the box and you will see.
Eve opens the box and gasps. There inside is a big beautiful diamond
ring.
Eve: Oh Scotty.
Scott takes the ring from her and gets down on one knee.
Scott: Eve, when I lost Dominique I really and truly believed I'd never
love again. But then I met you. You know, I'm not so good with putting
my feelings into words. But, Eve, you also have to know that I love you
with all that I am. And that I want to be with you always. You make me
smile, you make me laugh, you fill my life and my heart with so much joy,
I think sometimes I'm going to burst. Eve, I want you by my side for always.
Will you marry me?
Eve stairs at Scott in shock, her eyes full of tears. She nods and
then finely finds her voice
Eve: Oh Scotty yes! Yes, of course I'll marry you!!
Eve throws her arms around him excitedly and they kiss tenderly as
they hug.
Eve: Oh Scotty, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Scott laughs and pulls back
Scott: For what?
Eve smiles as she strokes his face
Eve: For making all my dreams come true.
Scott shakes his head
Scott: No, that's what you do for me.
They kiss passionately and fall back into bed.
Karen and Joe pull up outside the house.
Karen: So, you think anyone will notice we didn't come home last night.
They both laugh
Joe: I doubt it. Frank and Julie were going to have some together time,
so I doubt they missed us.
Karen smiles
Karen: True. And hopefully they got everything straightened out.
Joe: Yeah, I really hope Frank came clean with her.
Karen: And I hope Julie was up front with Frank. They need that honesty
in their relationship. If they don't have it, then there is no relationship.
Joe nods in agreement.
When they walk in they find Frank making breakfast.
Frank looks up
Frank: Hey you two, you're up early.
Joe and Karen blush. Frank looks at them closely and a smile spreads
across his face.
Frank: Wait a second. those are the same clothes you had on at the
wedding. You two didn't come home last night did you.
Joe: Well, we just had to much to celebrate I guess.
Karen shows off the ring.
Frank: Oh guys congratulations that's wonderful!
Frank hugs Joe
Frank: I'm happy for you, man. I know how long you've wanted this.
Joe smiles
Joe: Thank, yeah it really is a dream come true.
Frank hugs Karen
Frank: Welcome, to the family Karen.
Karen: Thank you Frank. I want to show Julie. Where is she?
Frank: Oh she's down stairs. You can go on down I'm sure she won't
mind.
Karen: Thanks Karen heads off.
Joe: So you and Julie have a good talk last night?
Frank sighs
Frank: She doesn't want that kind of relationship Joe, so there is
no point in telling her. She doesn't love me in that way, and I'm not going
to burden a girl who doesn't love me like that with this garbage.
Karen finds Julie downstairs on the couch crying.
Karen: Julie? Julie, what's wrong?
She sits down beside her friend.
Julie: Oh Karen. Frank, doesn't trust me, and I'm and I don't think
he even really trusts me. He doesn't want a future with me.
Back up to Joe and Frank
Joe: Wait a sec, she told you that?
Karen: Oh I can't believe Frank would say that.
Frank: Well, not in so many words, maybe. But she did tell me she's
very happy with the way things are.
Julie: He didn't need to. At the reception he made it very clear he's
happy where things are, and then I found out he's keeping the most horrible
secret from me. And when I tried to get him to talk about it he closed
up. He obviously doesn't feel comfortable enough with me, to tell me about
it.
Joe: Is it possible she, only said that because you she thinks that's
what you want?
Frank shakes his head.
Frank: I doubt it. I mean, she is the one that didn't want something
serious before.
Karen: But isn't it possible, that he only said that at the reception
cause he thought that's what you wanted to hear? And what secret are you
talking about?
Julie sighs
Julie: Frank has always been so straight forward with me, I have trouble
believing that would be the case. Besides, what I learned last night I
think says a lot. I mean, if he really wanted a future with me he would
feel comfortable confiding in me wouldn't he?
Joe: What if she changed her mind.
Frank: Then she should tell me. I'm not going to confide something
that major in someone who only wants a casual dating relationship.
Karen: Well that all depends on where he thinks you're coming from.
I mean, if he thinks you two only have a casual dating relationship and
that you don't want more. Well, it could make a difference in what he confides
in you.
Julie: I guess. But, the bottom line is he is happy, with the way things
are.
Joe: Maybe if you tell her how you feel...
Frank: Why should I? The bottom line is, she is happy the way things
are.
Joe: I'm sorry.
Frank: Thanks, I guess that's the way it goes.
Karen: Julie I'm so sorry. Listen what exactly did you find out anyway?
Julie sighs
Julie: Karen, I can't tell you. Basically I accidentally stumbled upon
Frank's child hood diary. And I found out something really awful. But it's
not my secret to tell. If Joe wants to tell you, then that's his business.
But, but Frank doesn't even know I know.
Julie shakes her head sadly as Karen goes stiff realizing Julie knows.
Karen: You mean, about the abuse?
Julie looks at Karen in surprise.
Julie: You know?
Karen: Yeah, Joe told me months ago.
Julie shakes her head sadly
Julie: Well, that just says it all now doesn't it.
Shelly walks into the police station and moves up to one of the officers.
Shelly: Hey, who the hell is in charge around here.
Officer Rick looks up somewhat taken aback by the comment.
Officer Rick: Uh, is there something I can help you with?
Shelly takes a puff off her cigarette.
Shelly: You a detective?
Officer Rick: No, but detective Garcia is on duty. Would you like to
speak with him?
Shelly: Yeah, go get him. Oh and make it snappy this is important.
Officer Rick: Uh, right, just one moment.
Officer Rick hurries off. Soon detective Garcia comes over.
Garcia: Hello, I'm detective Garcia.
Shelly: Shelly Lamburt.
Garcia: Officer Rick said you wanted to see me?
Shelly: Yeah, I wanted to know why the hell my fathers killer still
hasn't been found!
Garcia looks at her confused
Garcia: I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you are talking about.
Shelly sighs and rolls her eyes
Shelly: Typical. Look, back in 93 my father was murdered in cold blood.
Now, that was 8 freaken years ago, and so far there has been no arrest!
Garcia sighs
Garcia: I'm very sorry mam. Our department investigates every crime
therouly I assure you.
Shelly: Oh, yeah? Well, then why isn't this person behind bars?
Garcia: I'm not sure. Listen, give me your fathers name and I'll check
on the case. See, what happened.
Shelly: Well, that's a start. Okay his name was Ray Conway.
Chris is resting in his hospital bed when Grace comes in. He was taken
off the ventilator hours ago.
Grace: Hey, there. How are you feeling?
Chris: Sore, tired.
Grace: Well the soreness will go away with time. And the tired is why
you are in bed.
Grace smiles cheerfully.
Chris: Grace, my head is throbbing, I ache everywhere, and I'm starting
to turn the color of a banana! So cut the cheerfulness before I throw up.
Grace nods and comes over to him
Grace: Okay, well I will give you some pain killers. That will help
you feel better. And I'll give you a sedative so you can rest.
Chris: What I would like is to know just how badly my liver is damaged.
Because based on the color of my skin it's pretty clear that my liver isn't
working right.
Grace sighs
Grace: Well, if you want I can ask Dr. Boardman to come in and talk
to you about it.
Chris: Grace, I heard you last night when you said you wanted to be
my friend. Did you mean that? Are you my friend?
Grace is a tad taken aback by the question
Grace: Well, yes, yes. I'm your friend.
Chris: Well, what I expect from my friends is the bottom line. Now,
what is going on with my liver.
Grace sits down on the stool next to Chris's bed.
Chris: Chris, your liver was severally damaged. And it is failing rapidly.
Dr. Boardman did all he could to repair it in surgery but it wasn't enough.
The bottom line is you're going to need a liver transplant.
Chris takes a deep breath.
Chris: And with the small P factor I have, that will take a miracle.
Grace: Well, then that is exactly what you'll get.
Chris: Grace please
Grace: Hey, you said we were friends now, right? Well, I don't let
my patients much less my friends give up or lose hope. Now you're a fighter
Chris Ramsey. The fact that you are alive and awake shows that. We will
find you a liver, I just know it. I've been checking the registry and putting
the word out to all hospitals. And I've been trying to track down your
family. If one of them matches they could be a living donor.
Chris laughs and shakes his head.
Chris: The day anyone in my family does something for someone else
is the day hell freezes over. Look, I'll try to stay positive, okay? But
Grace I'm a realist and the reality is my odds are pretty bad.
Grace sighs
Grace: I'm sorry. Look, I'll go get you some medicine to help you with
your pain, okay.
Grace gets up and heads for the door. Chris suddenly wanting anything
but to be alone calls out to her.
Chris: Wait.
Grace turns back to Chris.
Chris: Actually, if you want you could hang out here for a little bit
first. I mean, you look tired and there is a perfectly good stool right
here. Wouldn't want you passing out or anything
Chris laughs nervously. Grace looks at Chris closely.
Grace: Chris if we are friends then you better give me the bottom line
too. Do you want me to sit with you?
Chris thinks for a minute
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, that would be nice.
Grace smiles some what surprised to see Chris Ramsey of all people
reaching out for company.
Grace: Okay.
Grace goes and sits by Chris. Chris feeling a little more secure lets
himself drift off to sleep.
Jake is working at the nurses station when Dr. Boardman comes up.
Dr. Boardman: Dr. Marshak, I need to have a word with you.
Jake: Okay.
Jake and Dr. Boardman walk over to the waiting area.
Jake: So what's this about?
Dr. Boardman: Yesterday, you got tested as a potential live liver donor
for Dr. Ramsey, correct?
Jake: Yeah. I know it's a one in one million shot, but I figured why
not. I mean, we both have the small P factor so why not give it a shot
right.
Dr. Boardman: Well that one in one million shot has come in Dr. Marshak.
You are a perfect match.
Chapter Five
Jake stairs at Dr. Boardman in shock.
Jake: I, I'm a match for Dr. Ramsey?
Dr. Boardman nods
Dr. Boardman: Yes. A perfect match in fact. It's rather odd we normally
don't see such a genetically ideal match in non relatives. Your genetics
are close enough to be twins.
Jake is staggered by this
Jake: Twins?
Dr. Boardman nods still on his own track
Dr. Boardman: Yeah, it really is something else. In all the other cases
I've been involved in where the match was this perfect the two people were
at the very least related and for the most part siblings. So are you still
planning on helping Dr. Ramsey? I hope you do realize that the odds of
finding another match like this. . .
Jake: I'm doing it. I wouldn't have gotten tested if I wasn't serious
about following through with it.
Dr. Boardman smiles
Dr. Boardman: Excellent. I'll be setting up the transplant for the
day after tomorrow. Come to my office later today and we'll discuss the
details.
Jake nods
Jake: Yes, of course.
Dr. Boardman leaves Jake just stairs after him.
Jake: A perfect match? Could it be?
Jake rushes over to the phone and dials a number.
John: Hello.
Jake: Hey, John it's me.
John: Hey there cousin how are things going?
Jake: Okay, I guess. Listen I have something I really need you to find
the answer out to, okay?
John: Well, I'll do my best. What's up?
Jake: I really need to know the last name of my biological family,
and the name of my twin brother.
John sighs
John: Jake look...
Jake: John listen to me okay. I love my family dearly, but I need some
answers and I need them soon.
John: I understand you needing answers buddy, but why right now?
Jake: I can't go into it right now. I mean, it could be a total fluke.
But if I'm right, look I'll explain everything later. So will you help
me or not?
John sighs
John: Yeah, I'll get right on it. Last name, and twins name right?
Jake: Right. Thanks John I really appreciate it.
John: Anytime man.
They hang up. Jake stairs at the phone for a minute and shakes his
head.
Jake: It couldn't be, could it?
Grace is coming out of Chris's ICU room to go check on other patients
when a frantic Eve comes running up to her.
Eve: Grace! I just heard. How is he?
Grace sighs
Grace: Well, right now he's sleeping, and he's fairly stable but..
Eve: But what.
Grace: If we don't get a new liver for him in the next several days
Eve: His liver is failing that quickly?
Grace: It was severely damaged in the accident Eve. Truth be told it's
a miracle it's working at all. We've been searching the registry, and trying
to contact family but so far we just haven't had any luck.
Eve shakes her head trying to stay calm.
Eve: I can't lose him Grace. I just can't. He's, he's my best friend.
Grace nods
Grace: I know. You two have always been very close.
Eve: Yes. Since day one it was the two of us against everyone else.
Eve laughs a little and shakes her head thinking back.
Grace: Well, I'm sure you being here will lift his spirits.
Eve nods
Eve: I wish I would have known, I'd have come sooner.
Grace: I'm sorry, with everything that was going on here yesterday...
Eve: No, no that's okay, I understand. What else went on here anyway?
Grace takes a deep breath.
Grace: Well, Matt was on duty when Chris was brought in and, and well,
he refused to work on him.
Eve: He what!
Grace nods
Grace: When Chris was brought in he was suffering from massive head
trauma, along with massive internal injures. Matt looked at him saw it
was Chris ordered us to call Boardman and Qourtermaine then left. He said
there was no way in hell he was working on Chris. Jill and I aside from
the EMT's were the only ones there, and with in seconds of Matt leaving
Chris crashed. His heart just stopped. Jill and I managed to get it going
again but it took us three tries.
Eve looks at Grace stunned
Eve: I, I don't understand. Did Matt no realize how critical Chris
was?
Grace: He knew Eve, he knew.
Eve: Well, did you call him on it?
Grace: Yes, a little while later. He said there were some patients
he just wouldn't work on and Chris was one of them. Said he hated Chris
and the world would be a better place without him. Then when I told him
I was going to report this to Alan. He, he threatened me.
Eve: WHAT!
Grace: He said, that since he's dating Ellen he'll use that to make
my life a living hell.
Eve is seething.
Eve: That holier then thou. pompus, basterd! Well, he's not getting
away with this. Chris is my best friend and you are a good friend of mine
to. No way in hell am I going to stand by and let that ass hole treat my
friends like this. That man isn't fit to be a doctor.
Grace: Eve, please I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get you upset.
Eve: Grace, you were right to tell me this is wrong and I won't stand
for it. I'm going to see Alan myself and make sure Matt pays for his actions.
Grace: No don't, I mean, look I don't want to cause any trouble.
Eve: Grace you aren't. Matt is, he caused trouble for himself the second
he refused to work on Chris.
Grace: Well speaking of Chris maybe you should see him before you do
anything else. I'm sure he could use your company.
Eve takes a deep breath.
Eve: You're right. But as soon as I let him know I'm here, I'm going
to make sure Harman learns a lesson he will never forget.
Eve huffs off into Chris's ICU room. Grace looks up at the ceiling.
Grace: Oh God please tell me I did the right thing.
Eve goes over to Chris's side. Her breath nearly taken away by how
sick, and weak he looks.
Eve: How could any doctor walk away from this?
Eve just shakes her head sadly. Then standing at his side she takes
his hand in hers and holds it tightly.
Eve: I'm not losing you, you hear me Ramsey? I'm not letting you go.
She wipes a stray tear from her cheek then sighs.
Eve: Don't worry Chris, everything is going to be okay, I promise everything
will be okay.
She looks at him with sheer determination.
Shelly waits impatiently in Garcia's office has he goes over her father's
murder investigation.
Garcia: Well, Ms. Lamburt it appears what happened was that our department
hit a dead end in the investigation. We couldn't find anymore evidence
and the evidence we had wasn't enough to arrest anyone.
Shelly rolls her eyes.
Shelly: So why didn't you keep looking? Of arrest someone you had a
little evidence on?
Garcia: Ms. Lamburt there simply was no where else to look, and we
don't go around arresting people without good reason. Besides we did look
for your fathers killer for a good solid year. And of course if any new
evidence should come up we'd fallow it.
Shelly: So if I came in here with some news you'd re open it?
Garcia: If it was something that could help us find the killer, absolutely.
Shelly nods
Shelly: Okay, then that's what I'm going to bring you. Cause one way
or another my father's killer will be brought to justice.
Shelly storms out of Garcia's office slamming the door behind her.
Once outside she thinks to herself.
Shelly: Well, since those losers can't dig up anything on there own
I guess it's time I started digging Lamburt style.
Shelly gets a devilish look on her face and heads off.
Joe is upstairs eating some breakfast when Karen comes back up.
Joe: Hey, want to join me?
Karen shakes her head and sits down at the table.
Karen: It's like watching a train reck in slow motion Joe.
Joe looks at Karen concerned
Joe: What is?
Karen: Frank and Julie. They are two of my best friends and they are
so right for each other, but they are systematically destroying their relationship.
Joe groans and flops back in his chair.
Joe: Oh that. Yeah, it certainly makes you want to grab the aspirin
bottle.
Karen: Joe, Julie told Frank she's happy with where the relationship
is cause he told her he was happy with it!
Joe nods
Joe: And he told her that because he thought that's how she felt. And
now Frank thinks Julie doesn't love him.
Karen: Oh it gets worse. Julie now not only thinks Frank doesn't love
her but that he doesn't trust her.
Joe: Doesn't trust her why?
Karen: Oh I don't know maybe cause she found his child hood diary and
started reading it, and now knows Frank was abused.
Joe groans and rubs his face
Joe: Oh God. And Frank isn't about to tell her cause he doesn't think
she wants a serious relationship and it's not something he would tell just
anyone.
Karen: And I let it slip that I have known for months from you.
Joe: Oh so she now thinks that Frank doesn't love or trust her the
way I love and trust you.
Karen: Doesn't love or trust her period. She said he made it very clear
how he felt last night.
Joe nods
Joe: Frank thinks Julie made it clear she doesn't love him or want
something serious. God this is a mess.
Karen: It is and it's so frustrating! They are so right for each other,
and they are on the same page but they both are such lousy communicators
and are so scared
Joe: That they are destroying their relationship. And now that Julie
feels lied to it's only going to make it worse.
Karen: And the fact she read his diary won't score points with him.
Joe shakes his head.
Joe: I sure am glad we know how to communicate.
Joe takes Karen's hand in his and smiles at her lovingly. Karen smiles
back.
Karen: Me to. But Joe I want to help them. I want to help them save
their relationship.
Joe: How? If we tell them what the other feels, well I'm just not thinking
that will go over to well. And I don't want to go behind Frank's back and
tell Julie.
Karen nods
Karen: Yeah, I don't want to betray my word to Julie either. But there
must be some way we can help them. You know, someway we can get them to
hear the truth without betraying our word.
Joe's face lights up.
Joe: That's it!
Karen: What's it?
Joe: All we have to do is get them to hear each other!
Karen: But how they are to scared to come clean with the other, no
to mention convinced they know how the other feels.
Joe: And they won't, well not exactly anyway. See, all we have to do
is get them to over hear one another. I get Frank to open up to me with
Julie in ear shot, Frank won't no that though of course.
Karen starts to get excited.
Karen: And I get Julie to open up to me with Frank in ear shot! Oh
Joe you're a genius!
Karen gets up and hugs him tightly.
Joe smiles
Joe: Well, I don't know about that but I do think it's a good plan.
I'm not saying it will save their relationship a lot of damage has been
done here. But
Karen: But it will get them on the same page so they can talk.
Joe: Exactly. And I think the sooner we do this the better.
Karen: Agreed.
Joe: Okay then lets make a plan.
Karen sits close to Joe as they work out their strategy.
Scott is at home doing some work when the phone rings.
Scott: Hello?
Rhonda: Hi Scott it's Rhonda. Listen, I'm sorry to bother you but,
but I just didn't know what else to do.
Scott: Ah you're not bothering me. Heck we have a daughter together
you can call me anytime. So what's up?
Rhonda: I'm just so scared Scotty. I just got off the phone with Garcia.
Scott: What did that monkey want?
Rhonda: He wanted to let me know, that Ray Conway's daughter is trying
to get the murder investigation re opened.
Scott bristles at hearing Ray's name.
Scott: Ah hell why would anyone want that guys killer caught. The basterd
raped my daughter!
Rhonda: I know, Scotty I know. I, I don't know why. All Garcia said
is that his daughter is trying to stir up the investigation.
Scott: Yeah, well after all this time I doubt it will get very far.
I just hope Karen doesn't here about this. That's the last thing she needs
right now. I'm telling you if I ever came face to face with anyone in that
mans family I'd teach them just what justice is all about.
Rhonda: I can't even imagine what a child of his would be like.
Scott: Evil as hell probably. You know the saying like father like
daughter.
Rhonda: Probably. I'm just so worried that was such an awful time for
Karen Scotty, for both of us.
Scott: Well, look, you and Karen, your not alone anymore. I'm in your
life now, like I should have been all along. And I'll be dammed if I'm
going to let that man, or his family cause my daughter any more pain then
they already have.
Rhonda: Thank you Scotty, but what can you do?
Scott: Simple. I'm going to find out every little dark secret his family
has and use those secrets to run this girl and any other members of her
family out of town for good.
Jake is working at the nurses station when a very sower looking Matt
rolls up.
Matt: So is it true? Are you going to give Chris part of your liver?
Jake: Yeah. Just so happens I'm a perfect match.
Matt: But Jake it's Ramsey. I mean, he's a waist of skin and bones.
It's such a wonderful thing you want to do, why not wait and donate to
someone who deserves it.
Jake: Matt it's not your place to say who does or doesn't deserve to
live, anymore then it's my place. All human life is precious Matt all of
it, including Ramsey.
Matt laughs
Matt: How on earth do you figure Chris's life is precious?
Jake: Because he's a living breath human being. I was taught to believe
that each of us carries a little piece of God with us. And that God loves
everyone. He doesn't pick and choose between people he loves us all.
Matt: But Jake Chris doesn't give a damn about anything but himself.
It's not like he's going to be grateful to you.
Jake: Matt, I'm not looking for him to be grateful to me. I'm looking
to save a life. And regardless of what you believe, I do happen to think
that his life is as valuable as yours or mine.
Matt shakes his head.
Matt: I don't see how you can say that.
Jake sighs
Jake: Matt, I'm assuming your father played God many times, and decided
who died and who lived am I right?
Matt nods
Matt: More times then I can count.
Jake: Okay. And I also know you have made a big point to not be anything
like him up till now correct.
Matt: Jake...
Jake: Yes or no Matt.
Matt: Yes but..
Jake: Well, then, you need to stop and listen to yourself. Because
right now whether you mean to or not you're acting just like him. I don't
mean to insult you Matt but think about it. You are saying someone doesn't
deserve to live for the mere reason that you don't like them. Now you can
justify your reasons all you want but when you get right down to it, that's
the exact same reason your Dad killed. Now, Matt I'm going to give part
of my liver to save Ramsey's life. And it's not because I think he's a
great guy, or because he's done anything great in the past, but it's because
we are talking about a human life and it's not our right to say whether
or not he deserves to live.
Jake walks off leaving a stunned Matt watching him go. As Jake walks
off his cell phone rings.
Jake: Yeah.
John: Hey Man.
Jake's heart quickens.
Jake: John, hi. Did you find anything out?
John: Yeah, actually I did. I called in a few favors and I got your
biological families last name, and your brothers name.
Jake takes a deep breath.
Jake: And?
John: Your biological last name is Ramsey, and your brothers name is
Chris.
Chris is begins to wake up and feels someone holding his hand. He opens
his eyes and sees Eve sitting next to him his hand grasped firmly in hers.
Chris: Hey Lamburt.
Eve smiles
Eve: Hi yourself roomie. So how are you feeling?
Chris moans
Chris: Like I could use a few dozen martinis.
Eve looks at him sympathetically as her heart aches for her friend.
Eve: Sorry roomie no martinis today. But, I can get you some pain killers.
Chris shakes his head.
Chris: No, if I'm going to die I'd rather spend my last days conscious.
Eve is taken aback by this.
Eve: Hey you are not going to die Ramsy, and I don't want to ever hear
you say that again!
Chris coughs
Chris: Come on Lamburt you're a doctor you can see what's happening.
I'm in total liver failure, and with my rare blood factor I'm going to
need a miracle. And I really doubt the big guy is hand out miracle's to
people like me.
Eve is silent for a moment.
Eve: But you don't know that they won't find one. Come on Chris you
can't give up. You, you have to keep fighting.
Chris: Why? Give me one good reason why I should keep fighting.
Before Eve can stop herself she blurts out the first thing that comes
to mind.
Eve: Because I need you Ramsey, because I can't imagine my life anymore
without you in it!
Chris stairs at Eve in stunned silence. Before anything else can be
said there is a knock on the door and Boardman peeks his head in. Can I
come in?
Eve wipes the tears from her face.
Eve: Uh yeah. Hello Dr. Boardman.
Dr. Boardman: Hello Dr. Lamburt, Dr. Ramsey. I'm happy to say I have
some good news for you. We have found a living donor for you.
Chris: What?! You're kidding me. You found a match?
Eve: Oh this is wonderful!
Dr. Boardman nods
Dr. Boardman: Yes. We have found you an ideal match. It's rather amazing
actually, normally such a great match doesn't come from a none relative
but sure enough that's what has happened.
Chris is starring at Boardman in amazement.
Chris: That's, that's amazing. I, I don't know what to say.
Eve: When is the surgery?
Dr. Boardman: The day after tomorrow.
Eve: I want to assist.
Dr. Boardman: That will be fine.
Eve: Thank you.
Chris: Yeah, thank you Dr. Boardman. I, I don't know what else to say
but thank you.
Dr. Boardman: Well, the real people to thank right now are Jill and
Grace. Had they not gotten your heart restarted in the ER none of this
would mean a thing.
Boardman's words renew Eve's anger.
Eve: Chris I need to go take care of something, but I'll be back in
a little bit okay.
Chris: Eve...
Eve rushes out before anyone can say anything else.
In the hall Eve talks to herself.
Eve: By the time I finish talking to Dr. Qourtermaine, Matt will be
lucky if he's practicing medicine at all.
She storms off.
Dr. Boardman: I'll go now too, and let you get some rest.
Chris: Uh wait one question. Do I know the donor?
Dr. Boardman nods
Dr. Boardman: Yes actually you do. It's Dr. Marshak.
With that Boardman leaves. Chris just stairs after him in stunned silence.
Shelly is now at the Port Charles Library looking up information on
her fathers death.
Shelly: Now if I can just find the name of an officer who helped with
this case I can get my own investigation under way.
She smiles devilishly as she continues to scour the newspaper clippings.
Then suddenly she comes upon a name and smiles.
Shelly: Officer Packer.
She smiles touching the name with her finger.
Shelly: Well, well, well. I think it's time I paid you a little visit.
She smiles mischiefly and leaves the library. She goes back to the
motel and changes into a very tight, very low cut and short red dress.
She puts on some hot red lipstick does her hair and then jumps in her rental
car and goes back to the police station. She looks at the picture of the
officer in the news paper.
Shelly: I should be able to spot him from this.
Just then officer Packer comes out and gets in his car.
Shelly smiles to herself.
Shelly: Perfect timing.
Shelly fallows officer Packer to Jake's Bar. She watches him go in
and then waits fifteen minutes.
Shelly: That should be long enough.
She gets out and saunters in. On entering she hears the usual whistling,
and less then gentlemanly offers. But pays no attention. She saunters over
to the table where Officer Packer is drinking alone. She places one hand
on her hip the other hand on the chair and flutters her eyes.
Shelly: Hi there, is this seat taken?
Felica is at home when the phone rings.
Felica: Hello?
Scott: Hey, Felica it's Scott.
Felica: Oh hi Scotty how are you doing.
Scott: I'm doing good but I have a little problem I need your help
with.
Felica: Oh? What is it?
Scott: Well, you investigate people's pasts right?
Felica: All the time.
Scott: Okay. Well, I need a complete back ground investigation on every
member of Ray Conway's family. Especially his daughter.
Felica: Ray Conway? Wasn't he the one that...
Scott: That abused Karen, yeah.
Felica: What a filthy man. But he's dead isn't he? Why the back ground
investigation?
Scott: Because his family is in town, and they are stirring up trouble.
And I'll be dammed if I'm going to let them.
Felica: And you want the information so...
Scott: So I can run them out of town for good. My guess is the apples
don't fall far from the tree so you shouldn't have any trouble finding
dirt on them. And once you get it, I'll use it to make them regret the
day they ever set foot in this town.
Joe and Karen are talking quietly about their plan.
Joe: Okay, so you know what to do?
Karen nods
Karen: Yeah, get Julie talking about her feelings for Frank, while
you keep Frank in ear shot. But are you sure we shouldn't do this in reverse?
Joe nods
Joe: Positive. I know my brother, unless he hears Julie admit his feelings
he won't budge. I mean, Julie could over hear him, but if he thinks she's
the least bit unhappy about what he's said he'll back petal like crazy.
Karen nods
Karen: But if he hears Julie say she loves him
Joe: He'll open right up. Now, did you take care of our little set
up?
Karen nods
Karen: The pipes in Julie's bathroom are good and backed up.
Joe: Perfect.
Just then Frank walks in. Joe winks at Karen.
Joe: Hey Frank listen. Something is up with the plumbing down stairs.
The pipes are really backed up. You want to give me a hand with them?
Frank: Yeah sure no problem.
The two head to the basement. Just then Julie walks in with some bags
of clothes
Julie: Hey Karen, I'm sorry about earlier. I was so wrapped up in my
own stuff I didn't even ask you about your evening.
Karen smiles
Karen: Don't worry about it. Listen why don't we go down stairs and
you can try on those new out fits for me while we talk.
Julie: Okay.
They head downstairs.
Julie: So how was your evening.
Julie plops her stuff down on the couch.
Karen: You know Julie I'd rather talk to you about you and Frank.
Julie sighs
Julie: Karen.
Karen: Julie I don't mean to be a pest really I don't. But I'm your
friend and I care about you. Look, I just think it's not right to hide
your feelings.
Julie: But Karen he doesn't love me, and he doesn't want anything serious.
He's made that very clear.
Karen: But you told him the same thing Julie.
Julie: But it wasn't true. I was scared, so I made up a stupid deal.
I mean, Karen I have never been more in love in my life and it scares the
hell out of me. And, and now well now Frank doesn't want a future with
me. He's very happy with the way things are. And if I tell him how much
I love him, how much I want to move forward with him, I'll lose him.
Karen: You don't know that. I mean, isn't it possible that he is so
scared of losing you that he's been telling you the same thing.
Julie considers this.
Julie: I don't know, maybe. But, but wouldn't you think knowing Frank
that he'd just come clean. Tell me how he feels. What does he have to be
scared of? And besides he doesn't trust me.
Karen: Julie, he does trust you, listen abuse is no something you just
talk about to someone you are casually dating. And if that's what you have
lead him to believe well then how can you expect him to tell you about
it.
Julie shakes her head.
Julie: You're right, you're right. I just, I don't know. All I do know
is he has told me that he is happy with the way things are and I don't
want to lose him. Karen I love him so much, I love him so much it hurts.
I can't imagine my life without him. And taking the chance that he doesn't
love me, and doesn't want a future with me...
Julie shakes her head.
Just then Joe and Frank step out of the bathroom. Frank has tears running
down his cheeks.
Frank: You love me?
Julie jumps startled and turns around. She stairs at Frank's tear filled
face.
Frank: You are in love with me?
Chapter Six
Frank and Julie stare at one another for a minute not sure exactly what
to say or do. Joe and Karen look at each other and smile.
Karen: I think Joe and I should let you two talk.
Joe: Yeah, we'll be upstairs if you need anything.
Joe leans in to Frank and whispers
Joe: Be honest with her Frank. Open up to her or you might lose her.
Karen leans in and whispers to Julie.
Karen: Don't fight it Julie. Be honest with him. What is meant to be
will be. And he doesn't exactly look mad about what he heard.
Joe and Karen then go upstairs.
Frank: Did, did I hear you right?
Julie takes a deep breath.
Julie: Frank, you've made it very clear how you feel about me, about
us. I…
Frank shakes his head.
Frank: No Julie I haven't. I haven't been clear at all. I’ve just been
so afraid of losing you that that I hid the truth.
Julie: Losing me?
Frank sighs
Frank: Yes Julie, losing you. You made it very clear that the last
thing you wanted was a serius relationship. That you wanted your career
to come first. And I respect that I really do. I don’t really see how love
could get in the way of that but I respected that you thought it would.
So I lived with it.
Julie: Frank I’m sorry I lied to you.
Frank: Lied to me?
Julie: Yes. See I had never been in love before. Not like this anyway.
Not so deeply or completely. And, and well it scared me. It scared me a
lot. So, so I pushed you away. I made up that stupid deal and acted like
it was really what I wanted and how I felt. But the truth is I was already
head over heals in love with you when we made that deal. I was just so
scared.
Frank sighs and shakes his head.
Frank: I lied too, Julie. I had already been in love with you for sometime.
And truth be told I was thinking about marrying you and starting a family.
But, but you said that wasn’t what you wanted. Julie I don’t remember not
loving you. You are my world and I’d be so lost and alone if you weren’t
in it. I was afraid if I told you how much I loved you, how much I needed
you, how much I wanted to spend the rest of my life just loving you, that,
that you’d leave me. So I lied.
Julie: And I thought you really didn’t want a future with me. That
you weren’t in love and truly wanted nothing more then what we already
had. I love you so much Frank, you mean the world to me. So, so to keep
you with me I lied. I figured if you knew how much I loved you and how
I wanted a future with you that you’d want to break up. You know, since
it wasn’t or at least I thought it wasn’t what you wanted.
Frank and Julie just stare at each other not sure what to say or do
next.
Frank: I’d ask why you didn’t trust me and our love enough to come
clean, but I know I’m guilty of the same thing.
Julie sighs
Julie: Trust has always been our biggest problem hasn’t it?
Frank nods
Frank: We have plenty of love, and we know how to be commited to each
other, and how to be friends but…
Frank shakes his head.
Julie: But honesty seems to be a real problem for us.
Frank nods in agreement.
Frank: How did you find out about the abuse?
Julie takes a deep breath.
Julie: I was looking for a book I’d dropped and found your childhood
diary. I didn’t know what it was at first so I started reading. I’m sorry
I read it. But I wish you would have felt comfortable enough with me to
have just told me.
Frank takes a deep breath.
Frank: It’s hard to talk about even now. And it’s only something I’d
talk about with someone who I felt loved me.
Julie: And you didn’t think that was me.
Frank: You are very good at hiding your true feelings Julie. I had
no reason to believe I was wrong.
Julie: What happened to the part of the deal that said if one of us
changed our minds they’d come clean.
Frank: You tell me.
Julie sighs
Julie: So now what. Where do we go from here, Frank? I mean, we love
each other but if, if we don’t have trust, can we really make this work?
Shelly and officer Packer sit alone drinking in Jake’s bar. Shelly
Batting her eyes and moving sugestivly around. Officer Packer drunk and
cleary turned on.
Officer Packer: So, you new in town young lady.
Shelly smiles
Shelly: Just got here yesturday. I’m staying over at Motel 7.
Officer Packer: You know that’s not in a very good part of town. A
young lady like yourself could get into an awful lot of trouble in that
area.
Shelly puts on a worried look.
Shelly: I had no idea.
Officer Packer: Yeah, as a cop like myself, you get to know the safe
area’s from the dangerous ones pretty quick.
Shelly smiles and bats her eyes as she begins stroking his hand.
Shelly: Well, I’m sure with a cop like you around it couldn’t be all
that bad. I mean, bad guys just couldn’t stand a chance with you around.
Officer Packer smiles and ajusts himself feeling rather cocky.
Officer Packer: Well I do my best. I bring in every bad guy I can get
my hands on. Of course not ever cop is as deadicated as me. Some just let
the bad guys fall right through the cracks.
Shelly: Oh that’s horrible. Does the commissioner know?
Officer Packer snorts.
Officer Packer: He knows, hell he’s half the reason bad guys go un
caught. Of course he’s not as bad as the last one.
Shelly: Oh?
Officer Packer: Nah, that one was really corrupt.
Shelly: How so?
Officer Packer: Well for starters he once let a killer get away.
Shelly: Really?
Officer Packer: Yeah, see this guy was killed, and, well, I’ll admit
he wasn’t a good guy but still the laws the law. Anyway a friend of the
commisioner, well her husband was the prime suspect, so what does that
comisioner do? Lets the evidence go and drops the case. I mean the guy
clearly did it, but because the victim was a no body and the killer was
a somebody nothing happened.
Shelly: Who was the suspect?
Officer Packer: A hot shot doctor over at GH.
Shelly: Oh, I wonder if I know him. I have family here.
Officer Packer: His name is Alan Qourtermaine. The Qourtermaines are
a very rich and very powerful family. Not to mention they had the commissioner
Sean Donnely in there pocket back then.
Shelly: How terrible. I’m sure a cop like you never would have let
that happen.
Officer Packer: Never.
Officer Packer reaches over and strokes her face.
Officer Packer: But how about we stop talking about my job and maybe
get to know each other a little better.
He winks at her seductively.
Shelly smiles at him equally seductive and runs her hand up his arm.
Shelly: I think that could be arranged. But you know I’m just such
a cureious little girl. I need the end to the story before I can consentrate
on other things.
With that she gets up and sits down in Officer Packer’s lap. Then takes
his hand and moves it up to her breast. Officer Packer is now so drunk
and turned on he can hardly see straight. As he begins rubbing her breast
he looks at her with pure lust.
Officer Packer: What do you want to know?
Shelly: Just two little things. The name of the victem.
She kisses him passionately.
Shelly: And where the evidence is against the culprit.
She kisses him again passionately.
Officer Packer: Ray Conway, and the evidence is in a cabnit down at
headquorters.
He kisses her passionately as she rubs his chest and begins unbuttoning
his shirt. Everyone in the bar is looking at them.
Shelly: And I bet a big, wonderful cop like yourself has the key.
Officer Packer is breathlessly kissing her neck.
Officer Packer: Oh I sure do. Right in my back pocket. Not that I can
do anything with the evididence though.
Shelly pulls back for a second and looks at him breathlessly.
Shelly: I’ve always wanted to do it in a jail cell.
Officer Packer: Your on.
The two of them leave still groping each other.
Alan is sitting in his office one the phone with Monica.
Alan: Monica, I’m telling you we have nothing to worry about. It’s
been years since Ray’s death.
Monica: Alan, the only reason the case was dropped was because of my
past with Sean! And he’s not comisioner any more. So if Ray’s daughter
finds any evidence, there won’t be anything I can do to stop it!
Alan: Monica listen to me. That evidence has been passed around to
so many people, and been sitting around for so long it’s worthless. Even
if they did re open the case they’d have to find new evidence, and at this
point it is highly unlikely that they’d find anything.
Monica sighs
Monica: I know, I know. I just don’t like the fact that it’s being
dragged up again. The man has been dead for years! Why on earth does his
kid have to start digging around now.
Alan: It doesn’t matter Monica. She’s never going to find anything,
and we’ve wethered other bad press before we’ll weather it again.
Monica: This really doesn’t bother you does it?
Alan: Monica, Karen Wexler is like a daughter to me, and that bastard
raped her. So if you are expecting me to say I regret what I did, don’t
count on it. I would do it again in a second.
Monica: Well just remember that when the police come knocking.
Alan: They won’t. They have no reason to. There is no evidence, and
what there is can’t be used. And may I remind you that Mac is good friends
with Sean and may decide not to look into it any further just like Sean
did.
Monica: Unless he gets pressured to.
Alan: From who? Some punks kid? Give me a break. Look I’ll call you
later okay.
Monica sighs
Monica: Fine, goodbye.
Alan: Love you.
Monica: I love you too.
They hang up. Just then there is a knock at the door.
Alan: Come in.
Eve comes storming into his office.
Eve: Dr. Qourtermaine I’d like to report an attempted murder.
Alan is taken aback.
Alan: Excuse me?
Eve: Chris Ramsey nearly died because of Dr. Harmen and I expect some
justice!
Alan stairs at Eve as she stands before him fuming.
Alan: Dr. Lamburt why don’t you just take a deep breath and have a
seat.
Eve sits down but she is still fuming.
Eve: Don’t think I won’t go to the police Dr. Qourtermaine this is
serious!
Alan: Dr. Lamburt there is no reason to threaten. Now I want you to
start from the beginning and tell me exactly what happened.
Eve: Dr. Ramsey was brought in yesturday after being in a horrible
car accident.
Alan: Yes I heard.
Eve: He sustained major head trauma along with massive internal injuries.
His injuries were so bad in fact that he is going to have to have a liver
transplant.
Alan nods
Alan: I know, Dr. Boardman has been keeping me up to date on his condition.
But how does this have anything to do with attempted murder or Dr. Harmen?
Eve takes a deep breath.
Eve: When Chris was brought in he was nearly dead. Completely unstable
and very critical. Matt took one look at him and told Jill and Grace ,who
aside from the EMT’s were the only people in there, that he wouldn’t treat
him. Said Chris was a waist of skin and bones and the world would be a
better place with out him then he left. Right after he left Chris went
into full arrest. Jill and Grace had to struggle all by themselves to revive
him. Thank God they did but they shouldn’t have been the only ones working
on him. A doctor should have been present. And was present until he decided
to play God. When Grace approached Matt about what had happened, Matt stood
by what he’d done. Said he hated Chris and basicly said Chris deserved
to die. Grace told him she was going to report this to you, and Matt then
threatened her. He told her that since he’s dating Ellen if she tells he’ll
make her life a living hell.
Alan stairs at Eve in total shock.
Eve: Look, we are sworn to save lives, all lives. Not just those of
people we like, but all lives. The fact that Matt walked away from Chris
nearly cost him his life, and the fact that Matt could walk away from any
patient
Eve shakes her head.
Eve: I hardly think Dr. Steve Hardy would have wanted such a doctor
working at this hospital.
Alan nods in agreement.
Alan: I’m sure he wouldn’t. These are very serious claimes Eve. Are
you sure about all of this?
Eve: I wouldn’t have come to you if I wasn’t. Grace and Jill along
with the EMT’s saw it first hand.
Alan nods
Alan: Well, then some definite action most be taken. Thank you for
telling me about this, and I promise something will be done.
Eve stands up.
Eve: Good, and make it quick, God know what else Dr. Harmen will do
with his God complex.
Eve storms out of the office. Alan sighs and rubs his head.
Alan: What a day.
Chris is laying in his bed when there is a knock at the door.
Chris: Come in.
Jake steps in
Jake: The nurses said you wanted to see me?
Chris nods weakly.
Chris: Yeah. Look, Boardman told me that you are the donor, and, well,
Jake: Hey, you know, I became a doctor to save lives, and it just so
happens I’m a match.
Chris: Yeah, well, it’s pretty major surgery. I mean, it’s not like
you’re just loning something out. Look, I just want you to know I really
am greatful to you. It’s not every guy who’d step forward to help someone
they don’t like all that much.
Jake’s wheels are turning wondering if he should tell Chris what he
has learned.
Jake: Hey, man, we may have had our differences but that doesn’t mean
you don’t deserve to live. You’re a good doctor. Besides I’m sure your
family would miss you like crazy.
Chris snorts.
Chris: Yeah, some family. My mother died when I was five. My father
beat me and my siblings most of my life and then kicked me out when I was
sixteen. I haven’t even heard from any of my siblings in year. Most of
them are in jail.
Chris stops himself surprised that he’s just told Jake so much.
Chris: Why the hell am I telling you all this!
Jake shrugs as he makes a decision.
Jake: I don’t know. But hey it’s okay you know. I won’t repeate any
of it.
Chris: Thanks.
Jake: You’re welcome. Look, get some rest okay. I’ll check back in
later.
Chris nods. Jake leaves. Outside Jake talks to himself.
Jake: Now’s not the time to tell him this. He’s to sick. I need to
wait. But, was I ever blessed to be given up. Sounds like Chris had the
childhood from hell.
Jake shakes his head as he walks off. Back in the room Chris is resting.
He sighs and with great effort reaches over to the dressor beside his bed
and pulls out a wallet. He opens it up and pulls out an old wrinkled picture
of two baby boys. Chris sighs as he looks at it.
Chris: God I wish I’d known you. I could really use you here right
about now.
Chris shakes his head sadly.
Felica is working diligently in her office when the phone rings.
Felica: Hello, Jones and Scorpio detective agency. Felica speaking.
Felica listents intently as an excited smile spreads across her face.
Felica: Oh, you do? That’s wonderful! How much did you find? Wow really?
Her wrap sheet is that long. I guess Scott was right about the apple not
falling far from the tree. What? Huh, well that might actually help my
client. Well, if she is respectable now then the last thing she’d want
is her past revealed, so I imagen he will consider this a plus. Yes please
fax the information right over thank you.
Felica hangs up and excitedly stands by the fax mushine. Soon it starts
to ring. When it’s done Felica eagerly grabs it an begins reading.
Felica: Okay lets see here. Oh he has two daughters. Guess the guy
got around. Well, the younger one was a stripper. Hmm must be the older
one who is respectable now. Says here she works at hooters.
Felica turns the page to the info on the other daughter.
Felica: Wow, prostotution, arrests for drug use, posesion of drugs,
and petty theft. Well, Scott was sure right about these girls.
Felica scans the pages for more info. Then gasps suddenly gasps when
she reads the girls names.
Felica: Oh, My God. No, no there has to be some kind of mistake. It
can’t be the same one, it just couldn’t be.
Felica looks at the pages again for a location.
Felica: I don’t believe it. A doctor at GH. I’d like to believe there
is more then one, but there isn’t. Ray Conway’s oldest daughter, is none
other then Scott Baldwin’s own girlfriend Eve Lamburt.
Felica shakes her head in disbelief.
Felica: This is one senario that I’m sure Scott didn’t imagen. I better
talk to Mac.
Felica heads out.
Julie and Frank both sit quietly as they contemplate what to do next.
Julie: I love you Frank, that I know.
Frank: But you don't trust in us.
Julie: You don't either.
Frank sighs
Frank: When you've been abused trust becomes a very difficult thing
to give.
Julie nods understandingly.
Julie: I'm sure it is. And and I can relate. I mean, one by one I learned
not to trust my own family. Maybe the things they did that hurt me weren't
the same as what your Dad did to you but... Well, it still has made trust
a difficult thing.
Frank nods
Frank: So I guess the question is can we over come this? Can we learn
to trust each other, and really communicate with each other.
Julie: I want to. I don't want to lose you.
Frank: I don't want to lose you either. I'm just not sure where to
begin. I believe you love me Julie, I can see it in your eyes. And I know
I love you but...
Julie: But it's just not enough.
Frank shakes his head.
Julie: What are you trying to say, Frank? You, you can't be suggesting
we give up on us.
Frank: Julie it's the last thing I want. But, but this really isn't
about love, or communication, it's about trust. Trust is the foundation
of any and all relationships and we just don't seem to have it. I'm not
preaching here, Julie, I'm just as guilty and I know it. The point is we
don't have trust and without trust we don't have much of anything.
Julie: We, we have each other.
Frank: As much as we are willing to give anyway.
Julie: Frank, that's not far. You kept yourself locked up so tight
there was no way I could have known the truth! Don't you dare lay this
at my feet!
Frank: I'm not! I said we and I know I made mistakes. Look, I'm not
saying give up forever. I'm just saying that maybe this is a sign. That
maybe we need sometime apart.
Julie: And what is that going to do?!
Frank takes a deep breath.
Frank: Maybe it will give us the space we need to figure out why we
can't seem to trust. And maybe, maybe if we get at what stops us from giving
ourselves over completely maybe we can fix it.
Julie is near tears
Julie: But we know why. We know it's because of our pasts! Please don't
do this Frank. I'm begging you don't do this.
Frank: Julie, I don't know what else to do.
Julie: How about fighting for us! How about us sticking together and
trying to over come this together! If we separate now, I don't know if
we'll ever be able to come back together. Frank if you leave me, I'm not
sure I'll ever be able to forgive you, and then trust is really out of
the question.
Frank takes a deep breath as what Julie has just said sinks in.
Frank: Julie I don't know what more I can do to make you trust in me.
Since day one I've been here for you. I've helped you, rescued you, supported
you, comforted you, whatever you've needed I've given. And if this is going
to work then we have to establish trust. And I'm fresh out of ways to do
that.
Julie: Trust isn't just about actions you know, it's also about communication.
Frank: Oh, you mean like when you told me you were the daughter of
a plumber, and had five siblings!
Julie: Oh get over it Frank! My God that was a year ago!
Frank: A lie is a lie Julie, so before you start preaching about communication,
you'd better think about that!
Julie takes a deep breath.
Julie: So I guess that's really it isn't it. I was wrong, we haven't
healed from that.
Frank takes a deep breath not sure what to say.
Julie: Well maybe you're right then. I mean, if you can't get over
something that happened a year ago, something that I've explained and re
explained a thousand times over, and apologized for, well...
Julie shakes her head trying to hold in the tears.
Julie: Maybe we should take a break for a while.
Frank: I'm sorry Julie. I just,
Julie: You just don't trust me.
Frank: I'm sorry
Julie begins to cry Frank reaches out to her but she pulls away.
Julie: No, no please don't. Look, I need to be alone right now okay?
Frank: Julie....
Julie: Frank, please, just go, okay, please just go.
Frank takes a deep breath.
Frank: Okay
Frank turns and walks up the stairs slowly Julie stands frozen in place
tears slowly sliding down her face. When she hears the door close to falls
onto the couch and begins sobbing.
Shelly and Officer Packer who is stumbling drunk have now made their
way into the jail and have reached an empty cell. They are breathlessly
kissing each other as they rip each others clothes off.
Officer Packer: You are a hot one aren't you?
Shelly smiles seductively as she shoves him onto the cot and pounces
on top of him.
Shelly: You don't know the half of it.
As Shelly and Officer Packer feverishly kiss and stroke one another.
Shelly unseen by a completely distracted Officer Packer reaches into her
purse which she has conveniently let drop by the bed, and grabs a suring.
She plunges the needle into Officer Packer's leg.
Officer Packer: Ahh!
Officer Packer passes out with in seconds. Shelly sighs and gets up.
Shelly: It's not easy being sleazy, but if you want results you got
to dance the dance.
She smiles and pats officer Packer's cheek.
Shelly: And all you know when you wake up in 8 hours is that you have
a killer hang over, and no idea what happened.
She laughs then quickly gets dressed, and puts on some sterol gloves
she snatched earlier at the hospital. Then gets into his pants and pulls
out a set of keys. Shelly exit's the cell and locks officer Packer in.
Then going into the office area she begins opening cabinets and going through
things.
Shelly: The evidence has got to be around her somewhere.
Finally she comes across a bag and a huge file labeled Ray Conway Case.
Shelly smiles to herself as she lifts it out.
Shelly: Well, well, well. What do we have here. I do believe it's exactly
what I've been looking for. And I do believe the media what enjoy this
information. Along with the tape I made of officer Packer.
Shelly laughs as she pulls a tape recorder out of her purse.
Shelly: I wonder what will happen when the town learns how corrupt
their trusted police department is.
She smiles devilishly re locks the cabinet and leaves with the file
and evidence.
Eve is in the on call room having some coffee. She thinks of all the
times her and Chris have shared since they've met.
Eve: Don't you worry roomie, I'm not letting you go.
Just then she over hears Matt and Ellen in Ellen's office.
Matt: All I'm saying is that if God chose to take Chris tomorrow during
surgery I wouldn't exactly be upset. Truth be told I'm kind of praying
for it.
Eve's face turns beat red.
Ellen: Oh, Matt, please.
Matt: Oh come on, you can't think he's worth something.
Ellen: No. But, but I am a doctor.
Matt: You are a wonderful doctor. And wonderful doctors like us, shouldn't
have to waist our time on dirt like Ramsey.
Eve's eyes fill with rage.
Eve: You bastared.
Matt: Look, I'm going to go get some coffee, then go check on some
worthy patients.
Eve: Coffee?
Eve looks over at the full pot.
Eve: Oh I don't think so.
Eve grabs the pot and begins pouring it out into the sink. Matt wheels
in.
Matt: Eve, what are you doing?
Eve whirls around and grabs a magazine and flings it at him.
Eve: You unbelievable bastared! I wish your brother had killed you!
You deserved it!!
Matt: Eve what are you...
Eve: Did you really think I wouldn't find out? Did you really think
I wouldn't care! DAMN YOU HARMEN! CHRIS RAMSEY IS MY BEST FRIEND, YOU GOT
THAT MY BEST FRIEND!! And I'll tell you something right now, when you go
after one of my friends you go after me. And Matt
Eve rests her hands on the arms of Matt's wheel chair and stairs at
him with a chilling coldness.
Eve: You don't want to go after me.
She shoves Matt's wheel chair with force, it bumps up against the couch.
Eve walks to the door then turns
Eve: Oh and incase I haven't made myself clear, you are going to pay.
Eve looks at him closely
Eve: You know, I don't know why you changed your name, you are as much
a killer as the rest of your family. Eric.
Eve leaves slamming the door behind her, leaving a stunned Matt watching
her go. All of the sudden his cell phone rings.
Matt: Dr. Harmen?
Alan: Yes, Dr. Harmen this is Dr. Oourtermaine, I need to see you in
my office right away.
Matt: Okay, I'll be right there.
Alan: Good they hang up, and Matt heads out trying to hide his nurves.
Mac and Felica are in Mac's office talking.
Felica: I just don't know what to do.
Mac: Felica you were hired to dig up dirt on Ray's daughter, and now
you have it. You have to give it to Scott.
Felica: But he has no idea that it's Eve! He thinks it's some punk
from the streets. This could reck his in tire relationship.
Mac sighs
Mac: Look, I understand your concerns. And I am not saying they are
unfounded. I mean, look, we all know what a hot head Scott is all right.
But he is in love with Eve, and I just don't see him forgetting about that.
Yes, he is passionately protective of those he's loves. But Eve is someone
he loves now isn't she? I mean, for all we know he's well aware of her
past. The only part he may not know is who her father is.
Felica: Well, that's true. I mean, he may already have these facts.
And it's not like she hurt Karen.
Mac: No not at all. And Scott knows that.
Felica: You're right. I mean, he wanted this information, and it's
not like Eve has hurt Karen. I'm just going to call him and give him the
facts.
Mac: Good. I know, it's tough working on a case when friends are involved,
but...
Felica: But if I'm going to take them, then I'd better be ready to
fallow through with them.
Mac: You got it.
Felica picks up the phone and dials then listen and hangs up.
Felica: Well, the information will have to wait a little bit. The lines
busy. So anything cases you need my help with?
Mac: Well, if you want to help you could go though some of these excess
files. Are publicist has gotten us a boat load of new clients.
Felica smiles
Felica: Oh goody.
Felica grabs a file and plops down in a chair.
Scott is busy in the kitchen, cooking as he talks on the phone to Eve.
Eve: Scott, I do not remember the last time I was this mad. Honestly,
if the Mancusie family called me and asked if I knew where Matt was, I
can't say for sure I wouldn't tell them.
Scott: You wouldn't.
Eve sighs knowing he is right then rallies.
Eve: You're right I wouldn't. And you know why I wouldn't? Because
unlike Harmen I value human life, all human life.
Scott: And that's only one of the one million reasons I love you.
Eve smiles her anger temporarily cut off.
Eve: I love you too. I'm just so tense right now. I mean, Scott Chris
is my best friend. I know, it's hard to understand, but when you have never
had a best friend or really anything before... Well, it makes you hold
pretty tight when you finally have one.
Scott nods
Scott: Makes perfect sense. I just hope Ramsey knows what a good friend
he's got, and he is a good friend to you.
Eve smiles thinking of all of the times Chris has bailed her out.
Eve: He is, he is.
Scott: So when are you heading over here? I'm making stuffed shells
for dinner.
Eve smiles
Eve: Sounds good, but I'm not sure I want to leave Chris alone. Not
with Harman lurking around.
Scott: Oh come on it's not like Matt's going to go in there and kill
him.
Eve: Yeah? Well, after what I've heard I'm not so sure.
Scott is surprised.
Scott: You really think he would?
Eve sighs
Eve: No, probably not. But I am worried.
Scott: Okay, look, go check in on him, and maybe ask a nurse to keep
a close eye on him. Then come over here and I'll help you relax.
Eve smiles
Eve: You're on. I really do need to get some rest. I'm helping with
Chris's surgery tomorrow.
Scott: See you soon then.
Eve: Okay see you soon. I love you.
Scott: I love you too.
They hang up and Eve heads to Chris's room.
Jake is on his way home on his cell phone.
John: You sure you want to do this? I mean, it's really great of you
but....
Jake: John, look, I know it's probably hard to understand but it just
feels like the right thing to do.
John: Because he's your brother?
Jake: Because he's a human being who will die if I don't. Look, I didn't
expect that I would be a match but I am. And I can't just pretend I'm not.
I have the ability to save his life, and I'm not going to walk away from
that. What kind of man would I be if I did?
John sighs
John: I know Jake, but it's a pretty major surgery. I mean, what if
something happened? Your Mom has already lost your father...
Jake: She's not going to lose me John, okay? Look, this surgery is
done all of the time. And I'm going to be in very skilled hands.
John: Yeah. Well, I hope you're right.
Jake: Hey, what's with this pessimistic attitude.
John sighs
John: Look, it just seems to me that you are making a lot of big decisions
really quickly, and like there is more to them then you are letting on.
Your Dad just died, then you found out you were adopted. Now in one day
you've found your brother and you're giving him part of your liver?
Jake: They aren't connected okay. Look, John I got tested to be a donor
before I even knew I had a brother. And I agreed to be a donor before I
new it was Chris. So, it's not connected. And yes I'd be doing this regardless
of weather or not I had found out I was adopted, or Dad had died.
John: Okay, okay. Well, good luck. So you going to tell him?
Jake: No, not yet. Truth is I'm not sure how to handle that part. Chris
is kind of a loner he may not want a brother. And besides now is not the
right time. I mean, he's fighting for his life right now. He doesn't need
this.
John: I would think he would need this now more then ever.
Jake considers this.
Jake: Maybe. I just don't know that I really want to build a relationship
with him yet, you know? I mean, I'm more then willing to help him, but,
well, you just have to know Chris. I mean, it's not that I don't want to
consider it. I am thinking about it. But with everything else going on,
I'm just not sure I want to talkle this right now.
John: Glad to hear your at least taking that slow.
Jake: Yeah. And besides who says he wants a relationship with me? I
mean, he probably knows his brother was given up. Since he hasn't looked
for me, I'm guessing it means he doesn't want to.
Eve knocks on Chris's hospital door, then peeks her head in. Chris
is sleeping. Eve moves in quietly and goes over to him. She looks down
at him and sighs.
Eve: Oh Chris...
Chris's eyes flutter open.
Chris: Hey Lamburt.
Eve: Oh, I didn't mean to wake you up.
Chris: That's okay.
Eve: How do you feel?
Chris shrugs
Chris: Like crap.
Eve nods sympathetically
Eve: Well after tomorrow you'll feel better. I'll be in the OR and
I'll make sure everything goes just right. I promise.
Chris tries to smile.
Chris: Thanks. I'm glad you're going to be in there.
Eve takes his hand in hers.
Eve: I wouldn't be anywhere else.
Eve notices a picture laying on the bed and picks it up.
Eve: What's this?
Chris: Oh, that's, that's nothing.
Eve looks at the old yellowed and wrinkled picture.
Eve: For nothing it sure looks like it has some history. Aww what cute
babies.
Chris: The one on the left is me.
Eve: Oh Chris you were so cute.
Chris: Still am.
Chris flashes a smile. Eve laughs
Eve: Well, I can see your sense of hummer hasn't been injured.
Eve hands him the picture.
Eve: Who is the other baby?
Chris sighs
Chris: My twin brother.
Eve is stunned.
Eve: I didn't know you had a twin.
Chris: Yeah. Well, I never even knew him so I don't know how much it
counts. He died not long after birth.
Eve: Oh Chris I'm so sorry.
Chris: Yeah me to.
Chris stairs at the picture sadly.
Chris: I would have loved to have known him. When I was younger, if
I'd feel alone, or scared, I'd just pull out this picture and talk to it.
Eve: Did it help?
Chris shrugs
Chris: Some I guess. It's not the same as actually having someone here
though, you know?
Eve: Yeah. How, how did he die?
Chris: I don't know. I didn't even know I had a twin until I was ten.
Eve: I don't understand?
Chris: On one of the many occasions I was locked in the closet by my
Dad I found this picture. I asked him about it, and he informed me that
I had a twin and then told me that if I ever brought it up again he'd kill
me. So I dropped it.
Eve: Oh Chris that's horrible.
Chris: That's my Dad.
Eve: Then how do you know he's dead?
Chris: I asked my cousin who is four years older then me. He said,
he was told the other baby had died.
Eve nods
Eve: I'm so sorry.
Chris: Me to. It would have been nice not to be alone, and it would
really be nice not to be alone now.
Eve takes Chris's hand in hers and holds it tight.
Eve: Chris you will never be alone.
Chris looks at her appreciatively.
Chris: Thanks.
Eve smiles and then pulls up a chair beside him and sits down.
Eve: You're welcome. Now, try to rest okay, I'll be right here.
Chris smiles and closes his eyes. Comforted to have her near.
