Sins Of The Father
Chapter Ten
by Katie
Frank sleeps restlessly in his room tossing and turning. He begins dreaming
vividly. Frank finds himself standing in the middle of his living room.
But as if he had a twin he sees another him in the room. Only that one
doesn't notice him. Frank watches in disbelief as his other self runs around
the room ransacking it. He sees himself breaking things, tearing things
apart, smashing things, putting holes in walls, and vandalizing the whole
place. He yells at himself to stop but nothing happens. His other self
then finally acknowledges his presence and starts talking as he continues
to ran sack the place.
Dream Frank: There is a problem with the house! I'm just going to destroy
it and start over!
real Frank: No! No, just fix the problem!
Dream Frank: No. No, it's to much trouble! I'm just going to reck this
place so I can start over!
Real Frank: No! No, you can't! That's not how you solve problems! You
don't just give up! You don't just destroy something cause it's not perfect!
Dream Frank stops at looks at real Frank closely.
Dream Frank: Even if it's easier to give up?
Real Frank: Yes! Yes, you can never give up on something that's important
to you!
Just then Julie walks into the house real Frank turns as she walks
over to him. She looks at him sadly and hands him a torn picture of the
two of them.
Julie: Does that include us Frank? Are you willing to not give up on
us?
At that exact moment Frank wakes up covered in sweat his whole body
shaking.
Julie tosses and turns trying to sleep. Finally as she drifts of she
begins dreaming vividly. She is standing on the side of a raging river.
The water is churning violently as a storm pounds the earth. Lightning
is everywhere, thunder roars angrily, as the rain pounds down relentlessly.
As she stands motionless in the torrential down pour she sees another her
standing right next to the bank looking down at something. She looks down
and screams in horror. There trapped in the swirling water is Frank. She
tries to move but is stuck. She screams at her other self.
Julie: Help him! You have to save him!
Her other self turns with a defeated look on her face.
Dream Julie: It's to hard. Everytime I grab for him he nearly pulls
me in. It's to hard.
Julie: But you can't give up! Keep trying! Brace yourself and go for
him! He needs you and you need him!
Dream Julie: He doesn't seem to want my help!
Julie is now crying hysterically
Julie: Then keep trying till he realizes he does! You can't let him
go! You've come this far just reach out and get him!
Dream Julie shakes her head.
Dream Julie: It's to late.
Julie: No. No! It's never to late! You can get him if you only try!
Julie finding she can now move lurches forward and tries to grab onto
Frank.
Julie: I won't give up on you!
At that moment Julie wakes drenched in sweat her body shaking.
It is now early morning. The sun streams gently into Chris's ICU room.
Chris wakes feeling sore and looks around he sees Eve is at his side talking
on the phone in a very annoyed tone.
Eve: Look, I don't care what any one told you! I do not have an assistant
and I did not want my cell phone, or pager turned off! I am not moving
and as a doctor it is very important I have those things! (...) Well, did
you ask them for any info besides the number to verify they had authorization
to use my card?(...) Well, that's why it happened then, and you should
have! I gave no one authorization to do that! And if this is how much you
protect your clients I just may take my account elsewhere! (...)
Eve sighs tiredly and rubs her forehead.
Eve: No. No, I need them. So please, turn my phone and pager back on.
If I chose to go with a new company I and only I will call to turn them
off! (...) What?! Why the hell should I have to pay a re start fee when
it wasn't my fault they were turned off in the first place?! (...) Okay,
okay, fine. I need them so I'll pay. But don't expect me to be a customer
of yours for much longer! Now re start them now!
Eve hangs up angrily.
Eve: Of all the nerve!
Chris looks at her still a little groggy.
Chris: Rough morning?
Eve sighs
Eve: Oh just my stupid phone company. Some prankster called and had
my cell phone and pager turned off. Now I have to pay to have them turned
back on. I'm telling you as soon as I find a new company I'm signing up.
Chris nods
Chris: I can't believe they are making you pay. You know, you should
probably call the police. I mean if they got your credit card number...
Eve shrugs it off.
Eve: It's just one prank. I'm not going to flip out over it. If it
happens again maybe but not now. So how are you feeling?
Chris: Sore and tired but actually better then I have felt lately.
Eve smiles happily
Eve: Well, you look much better. Your skin isn't yellow, and your vitals
are great.
Chris smiles
Chris: All because of you.
Eve blushes
Eve: Well, not all because of me. Jake played a big part you know.
Chris thinks back to what he over heard in the recovery room after
his surgery.
Chris: Yeah. I oh him a lot. Listen, Eve, thanks for staying with me
last night. You didn't have to do that.
Eve takes his hand in hers and smiles
Eve: I wanted to.
Chris smiles at this feeling his heart flutter. Eve looks at her watch
Eve: But now that it's morning and you are doing and feeling better
I should get home. I've been away from Scott for about 48 hours now.
Chris tries to hide his disappointment.
Chris: Yeah. I guess you should go.
Eve nods
Eve: I''ll call in and check on you later okay?
Chris nods as Eve hurries out the door. Chris sighs tiredly and leans
back.
Chris: Even if stolen moments are all I have with you, it's worth it.
Chris takes a deep breath and refocuses himself.
Chris: Now, to help out the guy who saved my life.
Chris reaches for the phone and begins making phone calls.
John sits next to Jake's bed as Jake pushes his breakfast around on
his plate.
John: You know, you really need to eat Jake. You've just been through
major surgery and you need to get your strength back. Come on eat up.
Jake sighs
Jake: I'm just plain not hungry. I've got so much on my mind you know?
My Mom is about to lose everything and there's not a damn thing I can do!
John: Hey, man, listen I know you're worried but it's going to be okay,
you know? Look, worst case scenario, all right? She'll go stay with my
folks until she gets back on her feet. And she will okay? Your Mom's tough
you know?
Jake: I just hate it that everything her and Dad worked for their whole
lives is gone. Gone! And for what? For what?! Some greedy con men to add
a few more bucks to their pockets?
John sighs
John: It stinks no two ways about that. Look, I talked to a couple
buddies of mine down at the police department back home, okay? They said
there going to try to nail these guys.
Jake: Really? Do they think they can?
John rubs his forehead.
John: I won't lie to you man, they aren't hopeful, you know? These
guys are slick not to mention real professionals. It's not going to be
easy, but there going to try.
Jake nods sadly.
Jake: I just don't get it. How could something like this happen to
my parent's?
John: They pray on the trusting, the elderly, and the good. Your folks
fell into all the categories.
Jake nods.
Jake: Okay, enough of this. I need a break. How is Chris doing?
John: He's doing great. His vitals are excellent, the liver is working
beautifully, and there is no sign of infection or rejection. Looks like
you saved him bro.
Jake smiles and blushes a tad
Jake: Nah, I just donated the parts. The surgeons did the real saving.
John shrugs
John: I don't know man. You can't do much saving without those parts.
So, I found out something interesting about Chris. wanna hear?
Jake: Sure what?
John: Well, right before he went into surgery he gave that nurse, Grace
Suliven I believe her name is. Anyways, he gave her his most prized possession
for safe keeping. You know, he wanted to make sure nothing happened to
it while he was in surgery.
Jake nods
Jake: Yeah, a lot of times patients ask family to hold onto something
important to them while their in surgery.
Jake sighs
Jake: My poor brother really doesn't have family. I mean, that he knows
of. So what was it?
John: A picture of him and his twin brother not long after birth.
Jake is surprised and stairs at John a minute
Jake: Really? He has a picture of us? It's his prized possession? But,
but then why hasn't he tried to find me? Or has he?
John: He was told you died at birth Jake. He thinks you're dead. He
holds onto that picture as the last remaining link between you and him.
Jake stairs at John in stunned silence.
Karen is sitting at her kitchen table drinking her coffee while Joe
showers and gets dressed. She looks over at yesterdays paper and shakes
her head and sighs.
Karen: I can't believe it. After all these years Ray Conway can still
haunt me. I can't believe he has a kid. More to the point I can't imagine
what kind of daughter he'd have. I bet she's one messed up individual.
She puts her coffee cup down and sighs
Karen: Thank God Garcia wouldn't take My Mom or Alan's confession seriously.
That's all I need.
She thinks about the story Garcia told her when she called to ask about
the situation and laughs.
Karen: The dueling confessions. I'll have to thank Alan at work today.
He has truly been like a father to me.
She gets up and stretches.
Karen: Okay, enough of this. I need something good to read. The paper's
probably here by now, and I can't imagine there would be anything more
on Ray Conway in it.
She goes to the door opens it and picks up the paper. On the front
page is a picture of Eve.
Karen: What's this?
Karen begins reading as she goes to sit on the couch.
Karen: Oh, my God. But...This...I can't....
She shakes her head in stunned disbelief as she continues to read.
Joe comes out and sees her completely ingrossed in the paper.
Joe: Interesting news?
Karen looks up at Joe with a dazed look on his face.
Karen: Ray Conway's daughter. The, the one that's stirring up trouble,
the one that had that huge article put in the paper yesterday.
Joe sits down next to Karen seeing the shock and disbelief in her face.
He takes her hand in his.
Joe: Karen what is it? Is there another article?
Karen: Yeah. Yeah, one telling all about her past and who she is. Joe,
it's Eve. Eve is Ray Conway's daughter!
Frank is having breakfast at the recovery room. He sees Julie come in
she looks at him he looks at her. They hold the look then break. Julie
sits over in the corner as Frank turns his seat at the bar around so he
doesn't see her. Just then Shelly saunters in she sees Frank then notes
Julie staring at Franks back and sighs. She walks over to Frank and pats
his arm.
Shelly: Hey, there good looking. You called it a night pretty early
you know?
She plops down next to him.
Frank nods
Frank: Sorry. Guess I just wasn't in the mood.
Emilo comes in sees Shelly and Frank and Julie staring at them. He
sighs and walks over to Julie and sits down across from her.
Emilo: For someone who wanted to dance the night away you sure headed
home early.
Julie sighs
Julie: I guess I wasn't in the mood after all.
Shelly watches Frank's body language as he hunches over his coffee
looking very down.
Shelly: So you going to go save lives with that grumpy look on your
face?
Frank snorts
Frank: Maybe.
Emilo sees Julie's upset look as she aimlessly stirs her coffee around
Emilo: So, is this mood of yours going to last the day?
Julie: Maybe.
Shelly: Okay, look, I don't like playing shrink or nothing but you
look down. You want to talk?
Emilo: I don't mean to pry but if you want to talk I'll listen.
Frank: I have messed up the best thing that ever happened to me and
I don't know how to fix it, or even if I can.
Julie: My actions have cost me the greatest thing that's ever happened
in my life. And I don't know where or how to begin fixing it.
Shelly: Well, you know, I'm no expert but I'd say trying to make your
girl jealous isn't helping much.
Emilo: Well, not that I mind the attention from a beautiful lady, but
making Frank jealous isn't going to help.
Frank: Who says it's about Julie?
Julie: What makes you think this has anything to do with Frank?
Shelly rolls her eyes.
Shelly: Oh give me a break. I got eyes you know.
Emilo: Julie, come off it. We both know it has everything to do with
Frank. Anyone with eyes knows that.
Frank sighs and nods conseedingly.
Frank: Yeah, so maybe it is. The point is she doesn't want to be with
me.
Julie: it doesn't matter, he's moved on.
Shelly laughs
Shelly: Yeah, not while you're chasing me around she doesn't. Frank,
she loves you. I can see it in her eyes.
Emilo snickers
Emilo: Believe me Julie, he hasn't moved on. Frank is to deeply in
love with you to move on that fast, and certainly not with the likes of
that girl. He's just playing the same game you are.
Frank: She's doing the same thing I am.
Julie: He started playing this game first.
Shelly: Well, that's a childish answer if I've ever heard one. Come
on Frank. She's only reacting to your actions. Since you started it, why
don't you stop it.
Emilo: Come on, Julie. I know you are more mature then that. It doesn't
matter who started it, what matters is who is big enough to stop it.
Shelly: You two need to talk.
Emilo: Some good old communication is needed here.
Shelly: So I'm going to take a hike, and let you get down to business.
Shelly grabs her purse and gets up.
Emilo: And since you can't do that with me around, I'll be going.
Frank: Thanks Shelly.
Julie: Thank you Emilo.
Shelly: Whatever.
Shelly saunters out.
Emilo: Anytime.
Emilo leaves. Frank and Julie stair at each other not sure what to
do or say. Frank taking a deep breath stands and walks over to Julie.
Frank: Hi
Julie: Hi.
Frank: You look nice today.
Julie: Thanks. So was that your new girlfriend who just left?
Frank shakes his head.
Frank: No. No, she's just a girl I went out with last night.
Julie raises her eyebrow
Julie: Really? Seemed pretty flirtatious for just a girl.
Frank shrugs
Frank: That's just the way she is. Besides you don't seem to be wasting
much time with Emilo.
Julie: Excuse me, Emilo and I have never once had our hands all over
each other like some people I know.
Frank: Really? Even when you were out dirty dancing last night?
Julie jumps up
Julie: How dare you?! Listen you hypocritical jerk! You have no right
judging me, or accusing me of things that you seemed just as guilty of!
Frank sighs and rubs his neck.
Frank: I'm sorry. You're right. I guess I'm just feeling a little jealous.
Julie: Yeah well, you don't have anything to be jealous of! I on the
other hand am not so sure!
Julie grabs her purse and storms out Frank sighs tiredly
Frank: Damn it!
John is sitting on the edge of Jake's bed as Jake absorbs what he's
just learned.
Jake: He thinks I'm dead?
Jake shakes his head.
Jake: Poor guy. You know from what I heard he had an awfully rough
child hood. And to also think his brother died.
Jake shakes his head becoming emotional and truly feeling bad for his
brother.
John: Hey man, he's okay now, you know? And...and now you guys can
build a relationship. I'm sure he wants one. I mean, that picture is his
prized possession.
Jake shakes his head and half laughs.
Jake: Who would have guessed Ramsey to be so sentimental.
John shrugs
John: From what Grace said all he needs is a good family to straighten
him out. And we can give him that.
Jake nods
Jake: You know I think you're right. When we talked not long before
the surgery he got real emotional. Let me see aside of him I didn't know
was there. I'm thinking he's scared to let it show, you know?
John nods
John: Yeah, I think that's it.
Jake nods suddenly feeling somewhat protective of Chris.
Jake: Yeah well that's going to change. He is not going to ever be
alone, or feel scared again. I'm going to make sure of that.
John smiles
John: Can't wait to get to know my knew cousin.
Jake smiles
Jake: Can't wait to get to know my brother.
Just then there is a knock at the door and a nurse sticks her head
in.
Nurse: I'm sorry to interrupt but I have a delivery for John Marshak.
John gets up
John: That's me.
He takes the FedEx and smiles
John: Thanks
Nurse smiles
Nurse: You're welcome.
She leaves.
Jake: Who is sending you FedEx's here?
John shrugs
John: Beats me.
John opens it and finds an envelope inside. In the envelope is a letter
and a check.
John: What in the world?
Jake: What is it?
John reads the note aloud
John: I have learned of your family's unfortunate financial situation,
and would like to help. Please except this check as a donation to help
your family get back on their feet.
Sincerely,
A friend.
Jake is stunned
Jake: But who else knows besides us? I mean, I haven't told...
John gasps as he looks at the check
John: OH, MY GOD! Jake this isn't any little donation, this is a check
for 75 thousand dollars!
Jake and John stair at each other in stunned silence.
Chris is resting in his room when a hospital volunteer comes in.
Vicky: Hi, I'm Vicky. Can I get you something to read?
Chris smiles at the young volunteer.
Chris: Well, hello Vicky. I'm Chris, and you certainly may. Do you
have today's paper?
Vicky smiles and pulls one out.
Vicky: Sure do.
She hands him the paper. Chris flashes her a grin.
Chris: Why thank you Vicky.
Vicky smiles
Vicky: Anytime.
She leaves and Chris settles back to read the paper. He freezes when
he sees Eve on the front page of the paper.
Chris: What the heck is Eve doing on the front page?
Chris begins to read.
Chris: Oh...Eve.
Chris's face fills with concern as he reads. Finally done with the
article the flings the paper down.
Chris: Damn it! What kind of pig puts something like this in the paper!
It has to be a lie, and even if it isn't it's no one's business but hers!
Chris shakes his head.
Chris: An article like this could do so much damage to her career.
Chris thinks a minute.
Chris: Well not if I can help it.
Chris grabs the phone and dials a number.
Mr. Davis: Yeah, PI Davis here.
Chris: Hey, it's me Chris. Listen, I need your help. Some jerk has
declared war on a very special friend of mine.
Mr. Davis: What do you want me to do?
Chris: I want you to find out who leaked private info about a Dr. Eve
Lamburt to the PC Harold. And once you have the name I want you to do a
complete and therough back ground check. Who ever he is, he's going to
regret the day he dared to mess with Eve.
Joe looks at Karen stunned not sure he's heard her right.
Joe: Eve? Eve Lamburt is Ray Conway's daughter?
Karen flings the paper at him as she gets up and starts pacing around.
Karen: It's all right there in black and white!
Joe reads the article to himself in disbelief.
Joe: This is unbelievable.
Karen: I can't believe that little back stabbing, two faced, bitch!
Joe looks up startled to hear Karen talking like that.
Karen: She comes to town, learns all about my sordid past, and why
I ended up like that to begin with. She moves in on my family, we give
her our friendship and our love. And this, this is how she repays us!
Joe: Karen...
Karen: I mean it Joe. That man stole my childhood, my innocence, and
could have very easily destroyed my life, he almost did! He also beat my
mother with in inches of her life!
Joe puts down the paper and goes to her
Joe: Karen...
She pushes him away.
Karen: So I finally get my life back together, my Mom finally cleans
up her act. We are doing good, you know? We're finally moving forward.
And then bam out of the blue this, this article appears! Joe, my Mom and
Alan both people I love dearly went to Garcia to confess! Not because they
are guilty but because they wanted to protect me and stop this!
Joe is alarmed
Joe: What?!
Karen: Yeah, that's right. They confessed. Thank God Garcia didn't
believe them! And now I find out the person I called my friend, the person
I trusted, my colleague is responsible for this!
Karen starts to cry
Karen: How can she call herself my friend and do this! Doesn't she
know how much pain that man caused? Doesn't she care what he did? Why is
she doing this?!
Joe reaches out to her and pulls her close
Joe: I don't know. I don't know. But, but maybe there is some kind
of explanation. I mean, the article sounds awfully one sided.
Karen pulls away
Karen: Joe, what other side is there?! Come on, she's Ray Conway's
daughter!
Karen shivers
Karen: God, just the name makes me Ill! She knows what he did, she
knew this would hurt me and my family, and yet she's dragging all of this
up?! And...and don't start with she just wants justice! If she even gave
a damn about justice she would have asked me about what was going on when
he died! How he died! He died while nearly killing my mother! No, no. There
is no excuse!
Joe stairs at Karen taken a back by her anger.
Eve arrives home she opens the car door and finds a news paper at her
feet. Eve picks it up and looks at it.
Eve: Why is yesterday's paper out here?
She starts reading the front page as she walks to the door. She groans
as she reads.
Eve: Oh, God, Shelly what are you stirring up now?
She gets to the front door and finds today's paper on the step. Eve
picks it up.
Eve: Why hasn't Scott gotten the paper? I hope everything is okay?
She then notices her picture on the front page.
Eve: What the...
Just then the door is flung open she turns and sees a very angry looking
Scott starring at her with such a cold and hateful look she feels like
she might turn to ice.
Chapter Eleven
Scott stairs coldly at a confused Eve.
Eve: Scott, what is it? Is something wrong?
Scott laughs bitterly.
Scott: Yeah something's wrong. The jig is up Eve, I know the truth!
Scott grabs yesterday's paper from Eve and reads the article about
Ray Conway being killed aloud. Eve looks at him confused.
Scott: Oh you want to play dumb do you Eve?
Eve begins getting upset
Eve: Scott I am not playing dumb now please tell me what this is about!
Let me in!
Eve starts to push her way in but Scott shoves her out.
Scott: THE HELL YOU'LL EVER COME IN THIS HOUSE AGAIN YOU BITCH!
Eve stands there in shock tears spring to her eyes.
Eve: Scott....
Scott: Ray Conway raped my daughter! He molested Karen repeatedly from
the time she was 11 till she was 13! He stole her innocence! And when Rhonda
found out and confronted him he beat her with in inches of her life!
Eve gasps in horror.
Eve: Oh, My God!
Scott: OH DON'T YOU DARE ACT LIKE YOU DIDN'T KNOW, AND DON'T EVEN PRETEND
TO ACT LIKE YOU GIVE A DAMN! I KNOW EXACTLY WHO HAS BEEN STIRRING ALL THIS
UP!
Scott points at her accusingly.
Eve: Scott, no I would never!
Scott rips today's paper from her hands and begins reading allowed.
Eve stairs at him stunned silent. Scott takes this as a confession.
Scott: I KNEW IT! YOU'RE NOTHING BUT A WHORE! A HEARTLESS COLD BLOODED
HATEFUL BITCH! THE APPLE DOESN'T FALL FAR FROM THE TREE DOES IT EVELYN
RAY!
Eve starts balling hysterically
Eve: Oh, Scotty, please, no, listen to me! I can explain!
Scott: EXPLAIN WHAT?! HOW YOU PRETENDED TO CARE ABOUT MY FAMILY, HOW
YOU COULD DO THIS TO MY DAUGHTER! THERE IS NO EXCUSE GOOD ENOUGH!
Eve moves towards him
Eve: LISTEN TO ME PLEASE!
Scott grabs her by her arms and squeezes them so tight Eve winces.
Scott: No, you are going to listen to me. You are going to go to the
press and the cops and take back everything you told them, then you're
going to have the press print a public apology to my family. And then you
are going to get the hell out of Port Charles, or so help me God, I will
destroy you!
Scott flings her down on the ground goes inside and slams then locks
the door. Eve gets up and runs to the door and begins banging on it wildly
and crying.
Eve: SCOTT, NO, NO, SCOTT! PLEASE, SCOTT LET ME IN! I LOVE YOU SCOTT,
PLEASE LISTEN TO ME! YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO ME! I DIDN'T KNOW I SWEAR IT.
SCOTT, PLEASE!
Tears are streaming down her face. Just then she hears noise from above
her and sees Scott looking out their bedroom window. He begins dumping
all of Eve's things out the window onto the lawn. Clothes, underwear, jewelry,
everything that belongs to Eve. Eve runs to the yard and begins screaming
up at him as he continues throwing things out.
Eve: STOP! SCOTT LISTEN TO ME! STOP!
Scott: I WANT YOU TO TAKE ALL YOUR GARBAGE AND GET THE HELL OUT OF
HERE BEFORE I CALL THE COPS!
Just then one of Eve's shoes hits her in the face. She cries out in
pain.
Scott: LEAVE NOW OR I'LL HIT YOU WITH THE OTHER!
Eve still crying starts trying to grab her stuff and runs for her car.
She drives away her heart pounding her tears coming down like an avalanche.
Karen is pacing around angrily still gripping the news paper.
Karen: I CANNOT BELIEVE HER! SHE COMES TO PORT CHARLES PRETENDING TO
BE SOMEONE ELSE, PRETENDS TO BE MY FRIEND AND TO ACTUALLY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT
ME AND THEN TURNS AROUND AND DOES THIS!
She flings the paper across the room. Then turns to Joe with tears
in her eyes.
Karen: Do you have any idea what it's like to be raped?! To be held
down and have your clothes ripped off! To have someone hold you down so
forcibly you feel like every bone in your body just might break! To have
someone hurt you so badly that you can't stop crying and the idea of being
touched by anyone makes your very skin crawl!
Karen starts sobbing and shaking uncontrollably. Joe goes to her and
gently wraps her in his arms and holds her to him.
Joe: I'm sorry, Karen. I'm so, so sorry. I wish I could go back and
protect you from that, I wish I could somehow change what you went through.
I love you so much. I love you more then I can even explain. And the idea
of someone hurting you like that it just makes me sick. I'm so sorry. I
love you so much.
Karen pulls herself together and takes a deep breath.
Karen: I know it wasn't right that he was murdered. I mean, no matter
how terrible someone is, murder isn't the answer, I know that. But Joe...
Joe: He was a monster Karen, he hurt you and your mother brutally.
I don't expect you or anyone else to want the killer found. But you know
the paper could be wrong. I mean, I think...
Karen: Joe it says in black and white right here! She is Ray Conway's
daughter and she is the one that's been stirring up trouble!
Joe: But that doesn't mean she knows what Ray Conway did to you. Karen
from what I know Eve hasn't had a relationship with him since she was a
kid. Remember, Cooper said he left. So it's possible all she knows is her
father was murdered. Maybe she thinks if he hadn't been he would have returned.
Karen considers this
Karen: We haven't actually ever talked about what happened to me so
I guess that's possible.
Joe: And the press has been known to exaggerate. I mean, look at what
happened with Rex. He was able to get the press to make Scott look pretty
bad.
Karen nods her anger relenting.
Karen: You're right. I should talk to Eve before I jump to conclusions.
Joe nods
Joe: She's been a good friend, I think she deserves the benefit of
a doubt.
Karen nods
Karen: She put everything on the line to help during that whole Rex
Stanten mess.
Karen suddenly gives Joe a strange look.
Joe: What?
Karen: This is a switch. Me blowing up, and you calming me down. It's
usually reverse.
Joe laughs
Joe: Yeah I guess we did switch roles here didn't we.
Karen smiles
Karen: Nice to know I can count on you to pull my Baldwin temper in.
Joe smiles and takes her gently in his arms.
Joe: You can always count on me.
Karen looks up lovingly into his eyes.
Karen: Promise, always?
Joe: Always.
They kiss tenderly.
Chris is resting in his hospital room when the phone rings.
Chris: Hello?
PI: Hey it's me. Listen I got the info you wanted.
Chris: That was quick. So who is it?
PI: Scott Baldwin.
Chris nearly jumps out of bed.
Chris: What! Her own fiancé did this to her! That...that doesn't
make any sense!
PI: Yeah, apparently the guy is mad at her cause of who her father
is.
Chris: Who her father is? She hasn't seen her father since she was
a kid! What could he have done that would make Scott hate her?
PI: Apparently the guy raped his kid.
Chris is stunned silent remembering the stories he's heard.
PI: You there?
Chris: Yeah, yeah. I'm here. Okay. Okay. look I don't care who the
hell her father is. She doesn't deserve to pay for his crimes. I want you
to dig up every piece of dirt you can find on Baldwin, I mean everything.
Then report back to me got it.
PI: Sure thing. So what are you going to do with it?
Chris: Get the information and I'll let you know.
Chris hangs up and shakes his head angrily.
Chris: I won't let anyone hurt you Eve, not now, not ever.
Across town at the local courthouse Matt is waiting for his bail hearing
and reading the paper. He laughs to himself.
Matt: Well, it looks like I've gotten an alie here.
He shakes his head.
Matt: Well, Eve looks like you messed with the wrong people. But don't
worry I won't forget that I owe you too. And you will pay Eve, mark my
words you will.
Frank and Emilo are at the fire station re loading the rig.
Emilo: Uh, Frank.
Frank: Yeah?
Emilo: Look, I just want you to know that there is nothing going on
between Julie and me okay? I mean, she's a great lady but she's not my
type. And more importantly she's not available. She loves you very much
Frank and I can tell you love her.
Frank scoffs
Frank: She has a funny way of showing it.
Emilo: I don't mean to start anything Frank, but the same could be
said about you.
Frank looks at Emilo somewhat jolted by this.
Emilo: The whole time she was with me you were the only thing she would
talk about. The thing is you hurt her and so she's acting out. Which if
I'm not mistaken is exactly what you're doing. You know, lashing out cause
she hurt you.
Frank sighs and sits down.
Frank: So what am I supposed to do Emilo, huh? Forget all the lies,
forget all the omissions?
Emilo: Frank, the only out right lies she told were a solid year ago.
You have got to get over that. She's explained a hundred times why she
did that and the only person who doesn't seem to get that is you. And as
for the omissions, well Frank you're just as guilty. How many times did
you tell me how much you loved Julie? My God, Julie was just about all
I would hear you talking about every single day. How much you loved her,
how much you needed her, how much you wanted a future with her, to get
married, have kids, and grow old with her. And everyday I'd ask the same
thing, have you told her? And you'd say Oh no I can't I might lose her,
she doesn't want that. So I'm just going to enjoy what I have. I mean,
Frank you can't hold something against her that you yourself also did.
Frank: So what should I do? She's angary at me now as it is.
Emilo: More like hurt. Hurt that you were willing to walk away so easily,
hurt that you hold things against her that you won't hold against yourself,
and hurt that you are running around town acting like an idiot with that
floozy you picked up.
Frank sighs
Frank: I know, I know.
Emilo: Look, if you go to her now, and apologize for everything, and
don't ever flirt with that girl again, I think you just might be able to
fix this. But you have to do it now, not later. She's a wonderful lady
Frank, and if you wait to long some other guy will pick her up.
Frank considers this. Over at the hospital Shelly comes up to Julie
at the nurses station.
Shelly: Hey.
Julie takes a deep breath trying not to lose it.
Julie: Frank isn't here, I'll tell him you were looking for him.
Shelly: I'm not looking for Frank okay, I'm looking for you.
Julie is startled by this.
Julie: Why?
Shelly: Cause I think you need to know what the score is. You and your
guy are totally messing things up and you don't need to.
Julie: I don't have a guy.
Shelly: Could have fooled me. I see how you and Frank look at each
other, and I know how he talks about you.
Julie: He...he talks about me?
Shelly nods
Shelly: You're about all he ever does talk about when we're together.
Julie likes this, Julie doesn't like that, Julie always says this, Julie
and I went here, Julie and I did this, Julie is his favorite topic of conversation
and based on how you looked over at him earlier I'd say he's pretty high
on your list too.
Julie: So then why the hell is he with you?
Shelly shakes her head and sighs.
Shelly: You squar chicks really don't know much about men do you?
Julie: Excuse me?
Shelly: Okay, look, I'll lay it out for you. Something you said or
did hurt him. When men get hurt they act out. He is only with me when you're
around, and that is because if you weren't around it would defeat the purpose.
He's trying to make you jealous so you'll come back to him.
Julie: Not that it's any of your business but he left me.
Shelly: Well, he regrets it that's for sure. Only he's got to much
pride to admit it. Go to him and let him know it's not to late. I bet you
money he'd take you back.
Julie: And why exactly are you telling me all this?
Shelly shrugs
Shelly: I don't see a lot of real love in the world, when I see it
I like to preserve it. Simple as that.
Julie: And what makes you think we're in love?
Shelly: Girl, look, you don't want to admit the truth to me fine, but
don't lie to yourself it's clear as day.
Shelly turns and saunters out leaving a stunned Julie considering her
words.
Jake and John stair at the huge check in disbelief.
Jake: Who would send us this kind of money? I mean, who do we know
that has this kind of dough?
John shakes his head in disbelief.
John: No one I can think of. And even if I could it's not like I've
been broadcasting what happened all over the place.
Jake shakes his head in amazement.
Jake: You think it's legit?
John shrugs.
John: Seems legit enough to me. You know, I can always call in a few
favors from my buddies down at the station. See if they can track who ever
wrote this down.
Jake nods
Jake: Probably a good idea. I mean, we need to make sure this is on
the up and up first. My Mom doesn't need any more scams.
John nods in agreement.
John: And if it's not a scam then we need to thank who ever sent it.
Jake: It really is amazing. I mean, talk about an answered prayer.
John: Yeah. The timing couldn't be more perfect.
Jake: But that is what makes it feel fishy to me you know?
John: Yeah, yeah, I do. I mean, lets look at this. We tell no one what's
happened and suddenly out of the blue we have this huge check in front
of us. It certainly is something to be looked into. I'll see what my buddies
can figure out.
Jake: Thanks.
John: So you going to go see Chris soon?
Jake sighs
Jake: Don't know. I mean, I want to don't get me wrong. But I know
Chris. He's going to need evidence before he'll ever believe I'm his brother.
Especially since he thinks I'm dead.
John nods
John: Like DNA testing.
Jake: Yeah. So I don't really know how to proceed, you know? I mean
sure. In a perfect world I'd go running in there tell him we'd both start
crying and hug. End of move. But I just don't see that happening. Not right
away anyways.
John: You never know. I mean, stranger things have happened.
Jake nods.
Jake: That's true. Well, I think we both need to rest right now anyway.
And I still have no clue what I'm going to say to him.
John nods
John: Just don't wait to long okay?
Jake: Oh I won't. I have a brother now, and I have every intention
of having him in my life.
Frank comes off the elevator and sees Julie he looks at her and his
heart is filled with emotions. Julie looks up and sees Frank looking at
her his eyes full of love and emotion. She looks back at him her eyes equally
filled with love and emotion. She smiles at him he smiles back. Then starts
towards her.
Frank: Hi.
Julie: HI.
Frank: Can we...
Julie: We need to...
Frank: You first.
Julie: You first.
They both laugh. Just then Julie is paged to the ER they both sigh
and look at each other.
Julie: I have to...
Frank: Go, go it's okay.
Julie nods and rushes off. Frank looks after her and sighs.
Frank: Maybe it's just as well I was interrupted. I need to find the
right words anyway.
Frank walks off. Julie arrives in the ER and begins treating the patient
but her thoughts are elsewhere.
Julie: I suppose it's just as well we were interrupted. I don't really
know what to say as it is.
Jake and John are watching TV. The news is on.
Reporter: Dr. Matthew Harmen is now out on bail for the attempted murder
of Dr. Christopher Ramsey.
Jake shakes his head.
Jake: I can't believe Matt actually tried to kill him. I mean, I knew
Matt didn't like him, but to actually try and kill him?
John: The guy is an animal that's for use.
Jake: But that's just it. I've known Matt now for a year, and never
once did I get the impression he was cable of this, or would even think
of doing something like this. I thought of him as a friend. And now...now
I find out that the man I called friend deliberately tried to kill my brother.
John: I'm sorry man. That has to be hard to learn something so bad
about a friend.
Jake sighs
Jake: Yeah, well that's how it goes I guess. I just hope security is
tight here. Especially around Chris. No telling what that man might do.
John nods
John: Yeah. Maybe I should go call Garcia. Have guards put around Chris's
room just to be safe you know?
Jake: Nods.
Jake: I think that's a great idea. I know I'd feel better.
John: Okay. I'll go call now, and I'll tell my buddies about that check
while I'm at it.
Jake: Thanks man.
John: Anytime.
They shake firmly.
Chris sits in his bed staring at the TV screen in disbelief at the news
he's just heard.
Chris: I don't believe it. That holier then though, self riches, stuck
up, pain in the ass tried to kill me. This...this is just unreal.
Chris shakes his head and laughs.
Chris: Well, I guess we now know who the real bad guy is around here.
Funny he looked down on his family and killed his brother for being exactly
what he is. A no account thug.
Chris sighs.
Chris: Well, I'd better call Garcia and get a guard put out side my
door. I can't let everything Jake went through and all the hard work Eve
did be for nothing. Besides I like my life.
Chris slowly eases himself out of bed and maneuvers himself over to
a wheel chair that was left in his room earlier.
Chris: It will be nice to get out of this room.
He looks around thoughtfully.
Chris: A few days ago I thought this would be the last room I'd ever
be in. figured I'd be leaving here with a toe tag. Now here I am alive
and getting well.
He smiles to himself and leaves the room.
Karen is working at the nurses station when a very shaken Eve steps
off the elevator. Eve sees Karen and takes a deep breath the articles still
spinning in her head. More tears begin to spill out of her eyes but she
quickly wipes them away and walks towards Karen.
Eve: Karen...I....
Karen looks up at Eve's tear stained face and can't help but feel concern.
Karen: Eve.
Eve: No, wait. Please just listen to me, okay? Up until today I had
no idea what had happened to you. I knew you had stripped, and I knew you'd
taken drugs. But I knew nothing about your childhood. And so naturally
I didn't know the name of the person who attacked you. Karen I am so sorry.
I can't even put it into words. It makes me absolutely sick to think I
am part of someone that filthy and that reached.
Karen bites her lip.
Karen: It was probably the most painful thing I've ever had to do through.
Eve: I'm so sorry. I didn't know Karen. Karen my Dad he wasn't around
much, it wasn't something there was anyway I could've known.
Karen nods.
Karen: But now that you do you're going to stop the news coverage and
you're going to stop harassing the cops right?
Fresh tears spring to Eve's eyes.
Eve: Oh, Karen, oh God, I wish I could. But Karen despite how it looks
I'm not the one doing this. I didn't go to the cops, I didn't get the press
to print yesterdays article. I swear to you, I have nothing to do with
this. I was as shocked as the next person when I saw the papers today.
Just then Scott comes off the elevator and sees Eve and Karen talking
then notices tears in Karen's eyes. Scott assuming Eve has hurt Karen goes
right for her. Scott grabs Eve's arm and whirls her around to face him.
Eve: Scott...
Karen: Dad.
Scott: HOW DARE YOU COME HERE AND UPSET MY DAUGHTER YOU FILTHY GOOD
FOR NOTHING BITCH!
Scott raises his hand as if he's going to hit her.
Karen: Dad no!
But before Scott can bring his hand down Chris who has seen and over
heard the whole thing comes up from behind and rams into Scott as hard
as he can sending Scott flipping over the arm rest of Chris's wheel chair
and landing flat on his back. Chris goes over to him.
Chris: Have a nice trip.
Chris then leans down his face full of pure anger.
Chris: You ever talk to Eve that way again or raise your hand to her
and you'll be the one in this wheel chair.
Scott jumps up full of anger.
Scott: How dare you threaten me you idiot! Now mind your own business!
Chris: Eve's well being is my business!
Scott grabs onto Chris and slugs him just as John rounds the corner.
Assuming Scott is Matt John lunges for Scott and slugs him to the ground.
John: STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM MY COUSIN! |
